Lead alloy Figurine. Half-round solid cast naturalistic figurine; head missing. The subject is a scantily clad (?African or Polynesian?) native, with leggings, a skirt of leaves or fronds; buskins on the lower legs; and anklets, armlets, a neck ring and bangles. The posture of the lower body is active or advancing, but the angles of arms and upper body suggest supplication, and recall images promulgated to support the anti-slavery campaign; these were widely known and were associated with the legend 'Am I not a man and a brother?', as promulgated by the pottery of Josiah We…

Lead Alloy Figurine. Hollow cast base and head of a figurine. If, as appears likely from the material, scale and condition, both are from the same object it would represent a coiffed female figure barefoot. The pedestal base bears floral or vegetal ornament in relief, and on its upper surface a scar suggests the loss of a second foot. The subject is possibly Diana and the treatment consciously Classical. Patinated overall. Suggested date: Modern, 1830-1900. This object was kindly recorded by Steven Harrison. Estimated height of figurine: 125mm, Diameter of base: 36mm, Thickness: 2.6…

Possibly a cast copper alloy figurine of unknown date. The figurine is in the form of a faun in a perching sitting position. The top of the body is straight with the right arm by his side and the left arm stretched around over his head. The face is sub-triangular and has nymph like features. The short, hairy and animal like legs are at a slight right angle to the body and the feet have four toes. The left leg is slightly forward and lower than the right leg. The back of the figurine also has defined detail, including the back of the arm and a small rounded bottom. The length is 44.1mm,…

Lead ?alloy Figurine. Fragment, representing a fingertip, from a figurine; the finger end is solid, but the further extent of finger is hollow cast. Though rendered in a naturalistic style compatible with Classical art, the use of hollow casting tends to suggest a more recent date. Suggested date: Modern: 1800-1900. Length: 21.79mm, Width: 10.61mm, Thickness (of casting): 1.68mm, Weight: 12.16gms.

Lead. Solid-cast figurine, with slight mould-lines apparent down both sides of body. Representing a pugilist wearing shorts and a prize belt, with right leg advanced; the treatment of hair may suggest a black African is represented. Traces of dark paint survive around neck and shoulders. Similar, but not identical to, a find from the Isle of Wight, no. 414 in the Portable Antiquities and Treasure Annual Report (for) 2007, page 162, representing the African-American former slave Tom Molineaux (1784-1818), whose English prize-fighting career reached a peak in 1809-10. (Probably) Lead Alloy or (possibly) heavily leaded copper alloy. Cast figurine, apparently representing a woman clasping three-fingered hands around her knees – other interpretations of the latter, including bread loaves, breasts or babies were considered. Overall, modelling is crude. The face has prominent cheeks suggesting high cheekbones, prominent long eyebrows – if these do not represent the upper part of a veil (see below), elongated eyes and a flat nose. Hair with a central parting appears to be represented above the forehead, and a tress may fall on one side of the head â…

Lead alloy figurine fragment. Hollow cast representation of the head of a wild boar. Naturalistically modelled with snout, tusks ears and prominent bristles, with well-defined almond shaped eyes, all in bold relief; probably at a scale of c.1:10. The outer surface is lightly patinated but the inside is not, suggesting prolonged exposure to the atmosphere before the figurine was broken. Probably an ornament, possibly a fanciful item of tableware alluding to the pleasures and perils of the chase. An heraldic significance is also possible: the crest of a boar's head appears on a plaque a…

Copper Alloy possible figurine fragment. Cast foot, apparently clad in a thick-soled sandle or boot; a possible indication of division between foot and putative shoe sole appears most clearly at the inner side of the foot as a series of intermittent horizontal lines. The finder suggests this may be part of a figurine; alternatively it may be a small vessel foot. If from a figurine, it would suggest a figure posed with this right foot forward and planted flat on the ground. Suggested date: Roman, 40-400.
