Copper alloy escutcheon: door or chest fitting. Oval sheet, cut roughly to shape, with an even more roughly cut key hole in the middle, of height 33mm. There are three nail holes of circa 2-3mm across, of angular form, either rhomboid or rectangular - equidistantly spaced at either side and above the key hole, with a fourth nail position probably marked by tearing below the key hole where the plate has been removed. The plate is now curved, though whether this is a function of its setting or of its forcible removal is uncertain. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Height: 7…

Copper alloy lock fitting fragment. Two joining fragments of a plate set around a keyhole of conventional shape and 22mm high. A line of pellets borders the keyhole, and beyond these appear the addorsed profiles of two male heads: the one to the right is open-mouthed, that to the left with down-turned mouth. Both masks have beetling brows with either hair or foreheads above of a flattened S-shape. The outlines are continued above and between the masks by a foliage border. The conceit appears to marry the medieval Green Man or Woodwose with conventions drawn from a Classical repertoire…

Copper alloy probable door fitting. Cast concavo-convex discoid plate with a central rounded boss with spirally incised radiating lines, and with two slightly sunken fields stepped towards an outer pelleted frame. A cabled motif separates the inner and outer orders. A collared round lug with traces of iron staining appears to have serveds as a single fixing point, which would permit the object to have rotated to reveal or conceal a keyhole if mounted as an escutcheon. Copper alloy door fitting. Cast straight-sided plate with a stepped and curved end and a straight stepped end. The latter bears a round nut through which passes an integrally cast round section pin, on which the object would turn to serve as an escutcheon covering a keyhole. This is confirmed by a key-hole-shaped stain on the reverse which, together with other patches of black, may arise from the oiling of the lock or its escutcheon. Traces of a stamped maker's name in capitals of modern form appear on the display face. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900. Height: 39.8mm, Widt…

Copper alloy and iron possible door fitting. Fragment of a cast object with a cylindrical solid component and a curved integrally cast hollow part, the latter mostly broken. The cylindrical part has ferrous corrosion trapped between inner and outer rings of copper alloy on that side opposite the projecting part. This is interpreted as the springing of a door handle, formerly seated and turning on an iron bar, and with a lighter curved handle. Probably polished by the finder. Copper alloy possible door fitting.
