John Creighton writes: Cuirass Hinge or Buckle Fragment; one side of the hinge, undecorated, which has a step cut out of it at one end for attachment, in the middle of which is a rivet. Length: 40mm, Width; 10.94mm, Maximum Thickness: 4.11mm, Weight: 7.8gms. MF notes that the rivet appears to have united the two sides of the outer hinge terminal, which viewed from the side would have a flattened Y-profile, presumably it here clasped a thin strap. JC’s reference: Camoludunum, plate CII, 15 and others, which show a slightly different form of attachment; and Hod Hill, A72 and A73.

Copper alloy possible cuirass fitting. Cast plate narrowed in its middle and folded with two dome headed rivets of head diameter circa 6mm and length up to 10mm passing through one side and engaging with holes of diameter 3mm on the other. The halves of the object are now splayed apart. The identification of the object as Roman was kindly offered by Dave Haldenby, and the object resembles objects described as fittings for 1st-century laminated armour from Colchester ( Crummy 1983 fig. 152, especially nos 4223 and 4226). Heavily abraded. Suggested date: Early Roman, 43-100. Length…

Copper alloy and iron or steel Possible Cuirass hinge, perhaps from lorica segmentata. Pair of cast lobate hinge plates with pelta shaped terminals; one hinge bears a centrally placed iron rivet of diameter 3mm, and where the plates meet an axis bar of ferrous metal of (now) diameter circa 4mm passes between them. Part of one of the terminals appears to be folded back and trapped between the plates. Rob Webley kindly suggests this may be later: ' [It] Would be good to get the FAs opinion on this one; it looks far more like post-medieval hinges that I've seen from boxes and the like…

Copper alloy possible cuirass hinge. A thick [2mm] cast straight-sided plate with a rounded terminal separated from the rest by a horizontal groove has a tapered integrally cast pin behind its rounded end; the other end is thickened [to 7.3mm] with a triangular tab projecting towards the curved end, again on the back of the object. Opposed lugs beyond this site retain a roller of diameter 4.4mm which is secured by narrower [diameter 2mm] pins at either end, possibly for the working of a hinge. A thick triangular spot of white metal plating and three grey spots appear at one end of the…
