Iron chain links. Two oval chain links of wrought iron, of apparently rectangular section. Each link is narrowed by wear at its ends. The links are also slightly bowed, apparently in alternating directions which suggests this is a deliberate aspect of construction rather than damage arising from wear. Suggested date: Unknown, Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1200-1800. Length (both links): 107.61mm, Width: 33.4mm, Thickness: 5.6mm, Weight: 30.87gms

Copper alloy surveying chain marker or Gunter's Link, as kindly identified by Tom Redmayne, correcting an initially erroneous identification by this reporter.
Cast flat-backed palmate object with four short 'fingers'; a round hole partially remaining at one end served for attachment. Diagonal file marks appear across what is taken to be the display face; this and all remaining edges are lightly smoothed by wear. This object marked an inrterval in a surveyors chain, as used for the measurement of parcels of land. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1750-1875.

Possible Fob chain. Machine made wound wire chain. Towards the other end of the chain a tiny slotted plate is neatly folded to retain a fragment of drawn wire of 0.9mm diameter in paired loops within which it retains some play, and soldered to the wire chain. This was presumably attached to another object, now lost. The other end of the chain is broken and its full extent is now tightly coiled and inflexible. Th…

Copper alloy Gunter's link, from a surveyor's chain, as kindly identified by Helen Fowler, correcting an erroneous identification by this reporter. An elongated flat oval or teardrop-shaped plate with a slight constriction, a loop and a drilled hole of 6.7mm at one end; pointed at the other. The edge is lightly bevelled all round; diagonal file marks appear on both flat sides. The pointed end is slightly thinned, perhaps by wear. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1775-1850
Length: 42mm, Width: 11.8mm, Thickness: 1.4mm, Weight: 3.78gms
