The back surface of the loop appears lightly countersunk, probably as a result of wear. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 950-1050. Length: 46.8mm, Width: 21.2mm, Thickness: 5.9mm, Weight: 12.00gms.

Copper alloy and iron bridle fitting. Copper alloy tube with one expanded end of indented sub-spherical form with flat sides which resembles that of a spanner, and an internal iron bar to confer mechanical strength. The bar protrudes by 13mm from its sheath. The indented form of terminal suggests this object engaged with another at this site. The combination of iron and copper alloy is typical of later Iron Age horse-gear, but the condition, and particularly the reporting of an identical component missing its iron bar along with this object, may point to a much later date. The cylinder has an internal diameter of 10.5mm at its plain end, but the aperture is constricted to achieve a square form 6.5mm by 6.5mm within the expanded end. The discovery of this piece has suggested a later date for NLM-9C4141 than might have been entertained in its absence; the two elements probably deriving from the same assembled object. Copper alloy and iron probable bridle fitting or cheek piece. Cast copper alloy terminal sheathing a corroded iron object. A ball terminal is separated from a round shank by two deep grooves. Below these, the copper alloy sheath is indented or split; its further extent is masked by ferrous corrosion. The object has a vaguely phallic appearance, possibly the fortuitous result of its partial survival. The sheathing of iron horse gear with copper alloy, for both decoration and to retard corrosion of the iron elements, is known from later Iron Age contexts and continued into the Roman per…

Copper alloy Bridle Boss fragment. Cast concavo-convex plate featuring a central hemispherical boss with apical knop or nipple and a circumferential border. The larger part of the central boss and about a fifth of the plate remain; the edge of a fixing hole of diameter circa 5mm occurs at one torn edge. It is uncertain whether the plate was originally gently curved, or whether a flat disc has been distorted by rough handling. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600. Copper alloy and iron probable bridle fitting. A massy tubular copper alloy bar of round section and diameter 11.8mm with a pair of symmetrically disposed expanded flanges which pass all around it, both set c.16mm from its ends. The ends of the copper alloy tube are bevelled or worn to rounded form. Ferrous corrosion and the mass of the object both suggest there is an internal iron rod or stiffener of diameter 8.5mm, which has yet to cause any damage to its external sheathing through its expansion as it rusts.
