Fragment of a cast copper alloy cheek piece from a three link bridle, originally consisting of a 70mm diameter oval sectioned (6. x 3mm) ring integrated into which is an tear-shaped loop. This has a circular section and shows no sign of wear. The points where the ring meets the loop are marked by lipped mouldings and there are curving incised lines on the face of the ring. The loop projects into the ring and the space between it and the rings inner sides contain comma shaped plates through which are rounded and triangular openings. Surviving width 67mm, Mass 38.94g

An Iron Age bridle bit. The object has a cylindrical shank, which is sub-oval in section. The shank swells slightly midway down and is of an uneven thickness. The shank is decorated with transverse ribs, some of which are very worn. One terminal of the shank is broken and is covered in iron corrosion. The corrosion around the terminal may suggest that the object has an iron core. The opposite terminal has an integral U-shaped attachment, which is also incomplete. The sides are attachment are of an uneven thickness and may have formed part of a complete loop. The outer sides are decora…

Copper alloy and iron bridle fitting. Cast round section rod with a flattened sphere at either end and an expanded collared centre section through which passed an iron object which has left extensive corrosion traces on either side. The ends have been pulled in the same direction, possibly the result of forces exerted during the use of the object, which was presumably lost or discarded together with its iron component. If the interpretation offered is accepted, the terminals may have prevented straps looped around the ends of the bar from slipping off. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1…

Copper alloy and iron gilded harness boss. Concavo-convex circular copper alloy cast boss in Neo-Classical style. The display face comprises the face of a youth with curling locks of hair possibly supplemented by ram's horns, framing a face with pouting lips, a prominent rounded chin and cheeks and strongly defined eyes, all within a wreath, which is itself surrounded by a garland of vegetal swags and round flowers, with seven probably acorn shaped knops projecting beyond it, with less well defined knops between them. Gilding traces appear occasionally across the display face. The fac…

Copper alloy bridle cheekpiece, as kindly identified by Rob Webley, citing BH-879007 as a parallel, and correcting an initial identification by this reporter of the object as a stirrup mount. Cast openwork plate with curvilinear elements of indeterminate interlaced creatures or tendrils. The flat back retains rust stains and and a white deposit, the two materials probably being unrelated though the former is often found on stirrup mounts. The reddish tint of the metal is also characteristic of Anglo-Scandinavian material. . Suggested date: Early Medieval, 1000-1100. Length: 38.6…

Possible bridle bit fragment. Cast pair of loops joined by a solid cast conical element. The larger loop is quadrangular with a wider straight end, and the smaller was circular; of the latter only part remains. A hemispherical object projects from within the triangular loop, and it appears possible this was separately made and may have been adjustable. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1850. Copper alloy and iron early-medieval bridle fitting: a cheekpiece. Curving plate with a rectangular loop at the top and a possibly openwork arrangement of ten apertures, mostly sub-circular. Extensive ferrous corrosion suggests this was attached to an iron object. Degraded moulded decoration comprises possibly zoomorphic terminals at the ends of the plate, apparently with long tongues projecting from the gaping jaws of beasts; vertical groups of ribs, and a possibly devolved beast head or mask ornament below the loop. David Williams here kindly identifies a projecting animal head (a l…

Copper alloy curb bit cheekpiece fragment, as kindly identified by Walter (Jo) Ahmet. Walter comments as follows: 'This is a Victorian bit fragment is it not?'. A substantially cast sub-rectangular-section bar with rounded edges, with a U-shaped slot at the top [as illustrated], possibly a suspension loop, and constricted to achieve a round section at its other end, perhaps to engage with a socketed element of different material. The latter part is lightly indented on one side and similarly slightly expanded at the same point on its other side. A single curving integrally cast round-s…

Copper alloy bridle bit link, as kindly identified by the finder. Cast D-section bar with a rhomboid loop at one end, a rounded oval loop at the other, and a bulbous collar immediately adjacent to the latter. The rhomboid loop has flattened D-shaped knops at its angles, while the oval loop is markedly thinned by internal wear. The back of the casting is lightly hollowed behind the bulbous collar, possibly indicating that this object was cast in an open mould. Suggested date: Late Medieval, 1000-1100. Copper alloy bridle fitting fragment, as kindly identidfied by Rob Webley, who notes: 'This looks like the terminal from a plate of a bridle cheekpiece of the same period (C11th)'. A cast plate with rounded protrusions from its edges, apparently representing the head of a beast combining attributes of horse and dragon. Three protruberances mark the jaws or snout, with four more depicting the head from its brow to a crest or ears. Well clear of the border, a closely spaced but crudely executed series of punched dots, each of diameter c.1mm, follows the outline, with spurs of three o…

Copper alloy possible bridle cheekpiece. Cast oval loop springing from a slightly expanded stem with lightly facetted sides from which project two short opposed arms, similarly angled away from the loop, and each broken at its end. An S shaped link of drawn and hammered wire is threaded through one of the loops. The base of the stem is stepped, and apparently broken across a narrower round section continuation. Copper alloy probable bridle link fragment. Cast loop of internal diameter 12mm with heavy trifid collared moulding, which meets an integrally cast moulded terminal. The terminal is probably broken from the further extent of a round section bar of diameter 11mm, with a scar showing where the terminal became detached. A less extensive patch of corrosion on the opposite side of the loop is less easy to interpret, and may represent a casting sprue The slight curvature of the main loop indicates it to have engaged a ring; the lower edge of the loop is heavily worn on both sides. Copper alloy possible bridle bit fitting. Cast tube with a chamfered aperture at one end, rounded at the other with opposed flat sides and a possible ball from a ball and socket joint with an indented terminal. The aperture within the ball is square, probably suggesting that a wrought iron bar passed through the copper alloy tube. Rust stains within the tube may suggest that the object was deposited together with this putative internal iron component [now lost to corrosion].
