Record ID: NLM-DB6747
Object type: BOBBIN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead alloy possible bobbin fragment. One end of a hollow cylindrical object whose diameter expands from the surviving end, where it is 22mm wide. The end has a central aperture of diameter 3.7mm with six slightly angled ribs on the outer side to strengthen it at what is here interpreted as a spindle hole. The outer sides bear perhaps ten low longitudinal ribs; for a weaving bobbin these would presumably help hold the first threads wound. Patinated overall. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800. Diameter (maximum): 23.4mm, Height: 13.6mm, Thickness (wall between ribs): 1.4mm, W…

Copper alloy possible bobbin. A possibly lathe-finished cast baluster-shaped rod with a protruding round section lug, now broken, at one expanded end, and a drilled pit of diameter 3mm and depth c.7mm at the other. Three circumferential grooves at the central expansion and a single groove at either end might formerly have retained inlay, though none remains. Suggested date: Unknown, Medieval, 1250-1500. Length: 37.5mm, Diameter: 5.7mm, Weight: 5.00gms

Iron bobbin. Cast cotton-reel-shaped object with expanded flat ends and a bulbous mid-part with a prominent mould line, and with a central longitudinal hole of diameter 17.1mm. This may be from a mechanical loom, perhaps an early version of those which would fill the factories of 19th-century Britain. The use of cast iron for a relatively small component is particularly unusual. The weight still falls so close to a round metric unit as to perhaps suggest manufacture on the European continent, where the metric system was introduced under Napoleon c.1800, and where it was presumably adop…
