Silver coin. Groat of Philip and Mary (1554-1558). Two light creases might suggest the coin had been folded, or at least that this was entertained if not carried through, in the manner of a keepsake. Mary's famed [or infamous] devotion to what proved the final and abortive attempt to reintroduce Roman Catholicism to England might have commended the coin bearing her image for such treatment; if so, this was presumably by a Catholic sympathiser.
