A Roman rim sherd, from a triangular rimmed dish with external burnished lattice decoration. It is definitely a product of the Roxby kiln industry as it has small fragments of brown ironstone in its fabric visible under magnification. The form can be directly paralleled to an example published by Rigby and Stead from the kiln site (1976, Fig 67. 53, Roxby Form P). It is a local copy of a black burnished ware form commonly produced in the south of England and should be dated to AD150-230.

A rim from a Roman narrow necked jar (diameter 9cm). The fabric has the brown sub- angular inclusions typical of the Roxby kiln products (Rigby and Stead 1976, 139). As the sherd is from Roxby parish this vessel is certainly from a kiln in the vicinity. The narrow necked jar is not within the illustrated repertoire of the kilns an example of a similar vessel in the Roxby fabric is illustrated from Winterton villa (Rigby and Stead 1976, Fig 82.62). The products of the Roxby kiln are traditionally dated to the Antonine period but the narrow necked jar form has a much long date range.

This sherd is a roman lug handle probably from the shoulder of a jar. The fabric appears to be a Crambeck product (Tomber & Dore 1998, CRA RE). Production a the Crambeck site is generally held to be from the late 3rd- 4th century with the main period of export in the later 4th century, vessels for this production centre are common site finds north of the Mersey-Humber line up to Hadrians Wall (Evans 1989, 43). Finds south of the Humber are more scarce but an increasing number of sherds have now been recognised from a survey of the Scunthorpe Museum collections and from other PAS finds …
