A complete cast lead Medieval Seal Matrix. The large flat circular seal is flat on the back and has no signs of any attachment. The front face has a central device of a cross with a crescent in each angle and the legend around the edge reads S': ALDRED[I]' : BADIW. The diameter is 26.0mm, the thickness is 3.1mm and the weight is 13.71g. The name Alfred is Anglo-Saxon, which although it survives today as a surname, vanished as a forename by the middle of the thirteenth century. Lead Seal Matrix. Fragment of a cast oval or vesica-shaped seal matrix. A three-leaved central motif may represent a fleur-de-lis. A circumferential legend is now illegible, due both to heavy wear and to loss of parts of the edge of the object. The stub of a handle or suspension loop remains on the reverse. The reverse, which is slightly hollowed, also figures an arrangement in relief of three vertical ribs and a rib at right angles to them, which itself vaguely resembles the central tripartite motif on the seal matrix.
