: Lead possible washer. Cast sub-circular object of plano-convex profile with a probably moulded hexagonal aperture; patinated. It is suggested this may be lead poured to secure an iron cramp in a Lewis hole in stone, or perhaps a railing, so as to retard the corrosion of the iron which would otherwise split it. Against this suggestion, there is no trace of rust visible, so if this was indeed its use, the object was removed from its setting after a short period. Were it not for the unusual angular hole, this object would have passed muster as a spindle whorl. Suggested date: Post-Medi…

Lead Spindle Whorl. Cast flat cylindrical whorl with a central aperture of diameter 9mm. A cast decorative design comprises a prominent rim on both sides, with a combination of triangles and pellets on one side, and a series of eight curving ribs radiating from the central hole on the other. The decoration anticipates that of Post-Medieval biconical whorls, but the cylindrical form may suggest a slightly earlier date, and this whorl is lighter than many examples. Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a central moulded tapered aperture of diameter 10-9.5mm, Walton Rogers form A1. A light nick next to the hole on the convex side may be a tying notch, possibly signalling conversion of whorl to line weight. The ample size of spindle hole could point to an Anglo-Scandinavian date and the mass may hint at a primary function plying cord, though the metal retains a grey tint except in its hole, perhaps arising from some unusual feature of its deposition - perhaps a period of water-rolling and submersion. Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a central moulded tapered aperture of diameter 10-10.5mm, cf. Walton Rogers form A1, and with shrinkage lines suggesting manufacture in an open mould; patinated. The spindle hole size could point to an Anglo-Scandinavian date; however, the flattened rim distinguishes this from other whorls of this form, and might leave open the possibility of this being a copy or partial copy [i.e. using half of a biconical whorl as a master] of a later type.
