Iron stud. Wrought iron shank, wider (13.5mm max.) than it is thick (10.7mm max.), with a flat rectangular head; the shank is now bent towards its pointed end. Probably for the reinforcement of a door or other structural usage. The good survival of metal may indicate a relatively recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1850. Length (as found): 58.2mm, Width (head): 28.6mm, Weight: 38.40gms.

Iron hook. A wrought iron hook comprising a crescentic blade exposed at its pointed tip by spalling of massive corrosion but which probably remains of consistent thickness below it, and an expansion at the other end which may mask a socket. These tools are common finds from agricultural contexts, and are thought to come from tools whose use related to that of a short-handled billhook used for reaping, pruning or hedge-laying (Manning 1985, fig. 14 no. 2, plates 22-23, nos 24-39). Manning's type 2 hooks are of Late Iron Age to Roman date, more commonly from Roman sites. Two examples co…

Iron latchlifter. Wrought iron stem with a barley-sugar twist, a round suspension loop at one end, and a plain bit formed by a projecting bar of diminished thickness at right-angles to the stem and in the same plane as the loop at the other. A globular end to the bit is probably corrosion or an adhering object rather than part of the key. The bit is not of a complex form for use with a barrel padlock, so a use as a latch-lifter is suggested. The preservation of detail along the stem and a modest extent of corrosion may suggest a relatively recent date or a sympathetic burial environme…

Ferrous metalworking debris. A small purple-brown tinted fragment of bubbled solidified slag or furnace waste with a smooth curvaceous upper surface and a vesicular undersurface which may suggest it has cooled on a flat surface. Testing with a magnet suggests significant iron content. This material is probably waste from ironworking. Such waste products have been widely re-used as building materials or hardcore; the Scunthorpe area's iron and steel making industries, established from the later 19th century and flourishing throughout the 20th century, would be a likely source. Iron unidentified object. A curved rod of wrought iron, probably approaching a square section - though the tendency for corrosion to flake in flat pieces can also create this appearance. Both ends are flattened and slightly expanded in width, as if crimped. The mass of the object implies good survival of the metal. Accompanying finds would make a medieval date feasible. Iron key. Wrought iron rotary key with a bow now appearing to be of trefoil or trilobate form, a possibly round section stem and a thick rectangular bit with the end of the stem protruding beyond it. There is a suspicion - no more given the surface condition - of a vertical cleft in the middle of the bit. The object is entirely covered in corrosion products, and the undisrupted state of this thick coating may suggest the form of the object to be well preserved. There has, however, been significant loss of metal, deduced from the relatively light weight of the object, which points to i…

Iron scissor blade. Wrought iron blade from a pair of scissors or light shears. The blade is sub-triangular, with a slightly indented back and a blade possibly curved by wear or sharpening. The stub of a longer handle extends from the humped part of the back, with an angled end of the blade below; a stepped surface on one side may indicate where the other blade lay. The tip of the blade and the loop of the handle are lost. The essentially straight form may suggest an early 19th-century date (Hume 1969, page 268, fig. 87).
