A fragment of a corroded medieval iron knife encircled by a decorative silver band. The slightly bent band is inscribed with the letters QVI: HON: D (The N is reversed). The inscription is contained within a beaded border. The band may have formed a decorative collar around the wooden handle of a small knife. The length is 11.8mm, the width is 9.6mm and the weight is 2.39g. (Description adapted from J P Robinson's BM Curators Report).

Iron knife blade fragment. Wrought iron; sub-triangular fragment of V-section, tapering towards a slightly angle-backed tip. The cutting edge of the blade is slightly wavy, probably from recurrent sharpening. The blade may also be slightly twisted at its tip, though this may merely be the effect of differential corrosion. The angle-backed form is typical of medieval whittle tanged knives. The thickness in particular is presumably exaggerated by corrosion products.Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1400. Length: 72.1mm, Width: 30mm, Thickness: 10.9mm, Weight: 42.58gms

Iron Knife. Blade of a knife, apparently complete. The blade preserves a V-section; as there is neither an angled back nor any evidence for a narrow tang, this is presumably from a later scale-tanged form. Corroded, with one detached fragment. Suggested date: Medieval, 1300-1500. Length: 125.19mm, Width: 16.76mm, Thickness: 7.52mm, Weight: 30.08gms.

Iron or Steel, possibly with lead alloy Knife fragment. Fragment of the blade, bolster and (probably) complete tang of a knife. The blade is of V-section and the tang of rectangular section. The bolster may be a separate moulded component of grey metal, perhaps pewter. The form does not appear among 16th and 17th-century finds from stratified contexts in London, so is likely to be more recent. Suggested date: Post-Medieval to Modern, 1750-1850. Length: 79.6mm, Width: (blade): 15mm, Thickness (at bolster): 11mm, Weight: 23.33gms.

Iron Knife. Wrought Iron whittle tang knife; possibly complete save for recent damage at edge of blade and at mid point of blade, perhaps incurred at its discovery. The back of blade may be angled towards its tip. This object accompanies Early or Middle Saxon objects from the same general location and an Early medieval date may be apt. The form, in so far as this is visible, resembles that of knives from Early Medieval settlement at Cottam, East Riding of Yorkshire, though the form remains widely current until at least the 14th century. An incomplete iron handle, probably from a Roman knife. The hollow cylinder has an oval terminal with a sub-oval opening at the end. Both sides of the oval terminal are decorated with iron wire in a scroll pattern. The cylindrical tube of the handle is decorated with a rib running horizontally around the broken end. There may be more decoration on the handle, but as it is quite corroded it is difficult to make out. The surviving length is 46.8mm, the diameter of the cylinder is 13.2mm and the width of the terminal is 24.7mm.

Iron knife fragment. Wrought Iron leaf-shaped or oval plate of V section with a pointed end and a flat, probably broken, end where the tang would have continued. This is considered to be the blade from a whittle tang knife. Corroded and bent nearly in half. Though the form is known from through the Roman to Medieval periods, it is probably most common at the earlier part of that date range. Suggested date: Possibly Roman, 40-400. Iron and antler Clasp Knife. Iron or steel blade retained between flat plates between plano-convex plates of sawn antler which are attached by three iron rivets on each side. A curved and slotted bolster at one end would permit the blade to open; a further plate of ferrous metal with a curved end below the blade, presumably sprung, would lock it when the knife was opened. The undulating surface of the antler handle plates is retained to afford grip, though smoothed by wear, and on one side split by ferrous corrosion products. Iron knife fragment. Tang and part of the blade of a large whittle tang knife. The V section indicates the blade had a single cutting edge; it was of shouldered form with the tang set off-centre relative to the blade. The tang now appears of rectangular section, though the delamination of the metal leaves it uncertain whether this is an original feature. Accompanying finds suggest an apt date; the form is undiagnostic and so could be earlier or later. Suggested date: possibly Post-Medieval, 1650-1750. Iron knife fragment. Crescentic V-section fragment of a wrought iron knife, comprising an almost straight back and a crescentic cutting edge with irregular losses close to the tip. Knobbled corrosion occurs at the other end, and is unrelated to the underlying form of the object. The tang is lost. The finder credibly suggests a possible Roman date; if this is accepted, and despite the unlovely appearance of the object, it may actually be considered as well-preserved. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Length: 75.4mm, Width clear of corrosion): 26.2mm, Thickness: 3.5mm, Weight: 20.01gms

Iron knife blade. A straight-backed V-section iron blade with a curved and pointed end, expanded and hollowed at the other end where a handle is thought to have been set. The blade is of c.30mm width at its midpoint, including an 8mm wide strip along the lower [as illustrated] cutting edge where metal has been lost to sharpening. Though an identification as a weapon is attractive for such a large object, this would fail to account for the expansion at the handle end which seems to rule out identification as a cutlass or hanger. The larger part of a scale tang and handle has presumably…

Iron possible knife fragment. A thin and slightly tapered wrought iron object with a thick crust of ferrous corrosion. Delamination appears longitudinally, and at one end the ghost of a V-section core is perceived by the eye of faith. A thin blade could suggest a whittle tanged knife. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1400. Length: 75.8mm, Width: 12.5mm, Thickness: 9.1mm, Weight: 16.71gms

Iron possible knife fragment. The curved tip of a straight-backed blade of probable V section, broken at its wider end. This may be from a small meat knife whose cutting edge is curved through sharpening, or possibly from the end of a scissors blade. The mass points to good survival of the metal core, so a post-medieval rather than an earlier date is suggested. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700 Length: 45mm, Width: 11.4mm, Thickness: 4.6mm, Weight: 6.03gms

Iron possible knife fragment, as kindly suggested by the finder. A leaf-shaped fragment of a corroded iron blade, probably from a straight-backed whittle tang knife; the curvature of what is here taken to be the cutting edge may arise from its recurrent sharpening. An interpretation as the tip of a longer spearhead might also be considered, as corrosion makes it uncertain whether the object is of V-section or a lentoid section. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500 Length: 67.9mm, Width: 26.8mm, Thickness (with corrosion): 7.5mm, Weight: 28.52gms

Iron knife fragment. The wrought iron tip of a blade with a curved cutting edge and a slightly angled back at its point, probably broken where the back became straight. The diagnostic V-section of a blade is better observed from the tip than from the broken end. The object is covered with dense ferrous corrosion, suggesting the break to be an ancient one. The mass, however, indicates reasonable survival of the metal core within. Suggested date: Possibly Medieval, 1200-1500 Length: 25.6mm, Height: 17mm, Thickness: 5.9mm, Weight: 5.00gms
