A flint saw. The blade is of a translucent grey colour. The dorsal face has one half covered in cortex. The mesial edge opposite the cortex has six small flakes removed to create a row of notches. Some of the notches have short parallel retouch. The distal end of the blade has also been retouched. The ventral face is plain. The length is 41.3mm, the width is 17.6mm and weight 5.08g.

Toffee coloured semi-translucent Flint with cortex, serrated implement. Elongated plano-convex tapered flake of good quality non-local flint or chert with two elongated and one oblique flake removal scars on one side, producing an angular section. A strip of thick creamy cortex has been deliberately left in place along one face of the convex side, and the long sharp edge opposite it has been very finely denticulated by pressure flaking with a fine point, perhaps the end of an antler tine. Chips at either end of the object are probably adventitious damage, though it is uncertain at wha…

Pale grey flint serrated implement. Bladelet with four long parallel flakes removed from its dorsal side, its end bevelled, and slightly curved on the ventral side. Short abrupt retouch, unusually executed from the ventral aspect, follows one straight edge to confer a finely serrated cutting edge; a lesser degree of apparent retouch on the opposite edge is probably fortuitous damage. The lack of patina may suggest this object was incorporated into a sealed context shortly after its deposition. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Dark grey flint of good quality serrated implement. Sub-triangular flake with covering angled retouch executed from the dorsal aspect and a low bulb on the ventral. The platform has also been trimmed. These preparations were followed by very shot abrupt retouch along part of the longer side, executed from the dorsal aspect. The lack of patina may suggest the object was incorporated into a sealed context shortly after its deposition. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Blue grey flint with cortex and dense patches of misty patina, serrated implement. A small flake with long parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb on the ventral. The accumulating patina, which is denser on the ventral surface, is interrupted by very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect along one edge. This may indicate the re-use of a flake which had already endured a period of exposure. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 27mm, Width: 15mm, Thickness: 4.4mm, Weight: 1.66gms.

Black Flint with cortex. Possible serrated implement. Long triangular section flake with pressure flaked notches along all three arises. The probably deliberate working is supplemented by numerous scars caused by impact on these edges, rather than adjacent to them. The retention of cortex is sometimes seen as a trait of Mesolithic material, but here cannot have assisted the use of the object. One or both ends may also have seen use as awls. Vary short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one straight edge, and disrupts patina here. Both the patination and re-use of an item of debitage could be accommodated within te Late Mesolithic. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 21.2mm, Width: 10.6mm, Thickness: 3.3mm, Weight: 0.65gms.

Grey flint with misty white patina serrated implement. A fragment of debitage with long thin parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and a small bulb on the ventral. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the straight long edge, formed a serrated edge so fine it is more easily felt than observed, and this edge subsequently accumulated patina. The patina is removed by very short abrupt retouch along the curved edge, illustrating the re-use of an old tool. The lack of subsequent patina may suggest the object was incorporated into a sealed context shortly…

Grey-buff flint serrated implement fragment. A small flake with long parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a slightly wavy concave ventral surface. Extremely short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one straight edge, forming serrations that are more easily felt than observed. Creamy patina with light iron staining covers the object except for at one broken end, suggesting it has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment after its deposition. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 24.7mm, Width: 11.5mm, Thickness: 3.5m…

Pale grey flint serrated implement fragment. A small flake with narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a flat and faintly rippled ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge, producing serrations so fine they are more readily felt than observed. The surface is lightly misted with patina suggesting the object has endured a limited period of exposure to a calcareous environment. Broken at one end, probably recently. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 20.2mm, Width: 11mm, Thickness: 2.6mm, W…

Pale grey flint with cortex spot; serrated implement. A small flake with long parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and a bulb on the ventral side. Dark chocolate brown flint serrated implement fragment. A triangular flake with two broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side, and with a flat rippled ventral surface with a bulb art its narrow end. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect conferred serrations so fine that they are more easily felt than observed along one long edge; the opposite edge is chipped. This distinctive material is probably of non-local origin, and is usually associated with early, economical and highly adept flint working. Broken at its broader end, probably recently.
