Middle Anglo-Saxon decorated disc-headed pin. The flat disc-shaped pinhead is decorated on the front with incised and chip-carved decoration consisting of an equal-armed cross with expanding terminals in a punched border. The body of the cross is also decorated by means of punching. Within the armpits of the cross, the fields are decorated with delicate interlaced knots developed from basic triskeles. Probably a tip fragment from a Lower Palaeolithic Acheulian hand axe. The opaque mid brown flint bears traces of polish all over. The axe is bifacially worked and has some retouch on one side (area a). It is likely that the axe was broken in antiquity. An incomplete cast copper alloy Late Roman amphora-shaped strap end. The slightly curved undecorated leaf-shaped body narrows from the neck that has two kidney shaped holes suggesting amphora handles. The terminal of the body is now missing. At the top of the strap end are two integral perforated lugs representing a hinge type attachment. Through the centre of these are the remains of an iron pin. The surviving length is 54.1mm, the width is 18.8mm, the thickness of the body is 1.9mm and the thickness of the lugs is 7.7mm.

An incomplete copper alloy high shoulders group Roman nail cleaner. The integral flat suspension loop with an external diameter of 9.6mm, is on the same plane as the shaft. The flat leaf-shaped shaft tapers from the shoulders to the two incomplete points. A worn and incomplete cast copper alloy Early Medieval Anglo Saxon Cruciform brooch. The trapezoidal head plate has an incomplete wing on the left and the right one is missing. At the top of the head plate is an integral knob, which is flattened in section and domed in outline. The arched bow is carninated at the front and concave behind and the corners are faceted. The brooch is truncated at the base of the bow and the foot is missing. Behind the head plate is an incomplete single hinge. The surviving length is 45.9mm, the surviving width is 16.9mm and the weight is 10.24g.

A complete cast copper-alloy medieval seal matrix. The circular seal matrix has an integral hexagonal handle with a flattened pentagonal attachment loop with an oval hole through it. The length is 21.5mm, the diameter of the die is 15.4mm and the weight 6.44g. The central device appears to be a grotesque with a lamb's body, feathered tail and what look like birds' feet. It is very similar to the designs in the borders of manuscripts such as the Luttrell Psalter (1325-35). The complete circular concave bowl has an incomplete integral circular-sectioned stem which begins as a triangular shaped ridge on the underside of the bowl. The spoon can be classified as a Crummy Type 1 (Crummy 1983, p. 70) The diameter of the bowl is 22.0mm, the depth is 5.5mm, the diameter of the handle is 2.5mm and the weight is 5.60g.

An incomplete silver Viking ingot. The object is an end cut obliquely from a cigar-shaped ingot of ovoid section, length, 23 mm. It is smooth on top, while underneath the surface is slightly pitted and flattened at the cut end, and there are around five nicked testing marks along each side. The form is typical of Viking-period examples found both singly and in hoards mainly of the late 9th and 10th centuries in Scandinavia and the Netherlands, as well as in the British Isles, e.g. the well-known hoard from Cuerdale, Lancashire, in the British Museum, deposited around AD 905. A complete Post Medieval silver annular brooch. The brooch is made up of a slightly convex silver sheet with striated decoration only around the base of the pin. On the back, maker's mark MC. The diameter is 22.5mm, the thickness is 3.1mm and the weight is 2.91g. Without the mark one might be tempted to think this artefact late medieval, but the form of the mark suggests a 16th Century date or later, though the mark is not recorded in Pickford (ed) of Jackson for this century. A hoard of nine medieval pennies, one of which is a cut halfpenny. Most of the Welton coins were produced right at the end of the Short Cross period, during the issue of class 8, i.e. c. 1242-7. There are two slightly older coins from class 7, and the only significantly older issue is the cut halfpenny - it is common for the cut fractions in hoards to belong to an older period of issue, rather than the newest coins. CURATOR'S REPORT 15th - 17th Century Medieval silver mount. Description A late medieval or post-medieval mount, in the shape of a cockle shell. It has been distorted and is bent roughly in its centre, where there is a hole. The hole appears to be the result of damage rather than deliberate piercing. The mount is of a type applied to a variety of objects such as belts, boxes, book bindings. The symbol of the cockle shell is associated with the shrine of St James at Santiago de Compostela, but there is no evidence to suggest that this is a pilgrim souvenir. The …
