Object type: STYLUS
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Iron Possible stylus fragment. Flattened wedge-shaped end or eraser with a slightly convex edge, and a robust shank of rectangular section now bent mid-way along its remaining extent. As Anglo-Saxon styli of iron usually have a thinner shank, this example may be Roman. Iron styli are fairly common as Roman site finds, though, due to the common discrimination against ferrous metals, rarer than copper alloy versions among metal detector finds. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Length: 58.9mm, Width: 17.4mm, Thickness (shank): 4.1mm, Weight: 10.17gms.

Iron Looped Staple fragment. U-shaped wrought iron loop, possibly of square section though this may arise from loss of outer layers of metal. As with many hand-made iron tools and items, the form remained the same from the Roman period onwards. Suggested date: Roman to Post-Medieval, 40-1800. Length: 38.4mm, Width: 42.3mm, Thickness: 9mm, Weight: 23.26gms.

An incomplete cast iron Roman P-shape Bow Brooch. The plain cylindrical tubular wings are perforated to take a concealed axis bar. The wings are covered with corrosion and only a fragment of the iron pin survives through the central slot. At the head of the bow is a triangular moulding and the humped curved bow is triangular in section and C-shaped in plan. The base of the bow is covered with corrosion and the foot is probably missing. The surviving length is 31.3mm, the width is 19.2mm and the weight is 11.58g.

County: Lincolnshire

An incomplete iron handle, probably from a Roman knife. The hollow cylinder has an oval terminal with a sub-oval opening at the end. Both sides of the oval terminal are decorated with iron wire in a scroll pattern. The cylindrical tube of the handle is decorated with a rib running horizontally around the broken end. There may be more decoration on the handle, but as it is quite corroded it is difficult to make out. The surviving length is 46.8mm, the diameter of the cylinder is 13.2mm and the width of the terminal is 24.7mm.

Iron knife fragment. Wrought Iron leaf-shaped or oval plate of V section with a pointed end and a flat, probably broken, end where the tang would have continued. This is considered to be the blade from a whittle tang knife. Corroded and bent nearly in half. Though the form is known from through the Roman to Medieval periods, it is probably most common at the earlier part of that date range. Suggested date: Possibly Roman, 40-400. Length (as found): 40mm, Width: 26mm, Thickness (back of blade): 4.4mm, Weight: 14.86gms.

Iron brooch. Wrought iron brooch of Headstud type, cf. Mackreth type Headstud 3.a. Rectangular wings with two vertical ribs on the front defining square cells apt to receive enamel are surmounted by a loop through which the chord of the spring passes; the head has a central rearward lug through which passes an axis bar. A spring of seven coils is set with three coils to one side of the lug and four to the other. . The wings are met by a rectangular section bow with a depression at the top; it is uncertain whether a stud has been lost from here. Below the dimple, the flat front of the…

Iron knife. Wrought iron whittle tang knife with V section blade of length c.100mm whose flat back aligns with that of the tang, of length c.65mm. The lower edge of the blade joins the tang diagonally, and has an angled back at its tip which meets the upward curve of the cutting edge, albeit this form might be the result of sharpening, cf. Manning Type 18b. The tang tapers towards a pointed end whose lower edge is curved. Th tip of the blade is bent. This object is robust and well-preserved, making its comparison with objects typically recovered in execrable condition difficult; if th…

Iron padlock fragment. A tapering rectangular leaf projecting from a rectangular block within one thick end of a cylindrical case, with an open cross form at its end, though these holes are now blind, perhaps suggesting a key would be inserted from the other, missing, end, to move the leaf spring. Possibly Manning Type 1; padlocks are known from the later Iron Age onwards. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Diameter: 24.5mm, Length: 36.1mm, Thickness (end of case): 8.1mm, Weight: 18.41gms

Iron possible trowel. Tanged tool with a flat sub-triangular blade. Iron knife. Wrought iron whittle tang knife, with a broad V section blade with a curved back and blade, the latter feature probably the result of sharpening which has left a pointed end slightly upturned. The rectangular section tang is circa 40mm long and the blade circa 60mm long. The excellent condition, and lack of corrosion must suggest that this object has recently been disturbed from a sealed and probably anaerobic context. Suggested date: Roman, 40-400. Iron brooch. Wrought iron T shaped bow brooch with possibly thickened or decorated ends to its wings, possibly one of the Colchester derivative family. The bow has an apparently angular section, though this is almost certainly the result of the fractured loss of corrosion products. Three detached fragments of rust in the bag indicate the process of deterioration has continued apace since the discovery of the brooch. Suggested date: Early Roman, 50-125. Iron hook. A wrought iron hook comprising a crescentic blade exposed at its pointed tip by spalling of massive corrosion but which probably remains of consistent thickness below it, and an expansion at the other end which may mask a socket. These tools are common finds from agricultural contexts, and are thought to come from tools whose use related to that of a short-handled billhook used for reaping, pruning or hedge-laying (Manning 1985, fig. 14 no. 2, plates 22-23, nos 24-39). Manning's type 2 hooks are of Late Iron Age to Roman date, more commonly from Roman sites. Two examples co…

Iron knife fragment. Crescentic V-section fragment of a wrought iron knife, comprising an almost straight back and a crescentic cutting edge with irregular losses close to the tip. Knobbled corrosion occurs at the other end, and is unrelated to the underlying form of the object. The tang is lost. The finder credibly suggests a possible Roman date; if this is accepted, and despite the unlovely appearance of the object, it may actually be considered as well-preserved. Iron spearhead. Cast socket and round-section shaft of a wrought iron socketed implement with a solid shank now terminating in a tapered and coiled end. The diameter at the socket is 21.6mm, suggesting a round-section wooden shaft of diameter c.16mm. The socket is closed by a butted joint of length 41mm, and the base of the socket may have projected by c.12mm if it has not merely been broken raggedly, which is more likely. The solid shank above the socket is bent once at the top of the socket, and again, more markedly, close to the tip which is now curled. Suggested date: Late Roman, …

Iron nails. Eight wrought iron nail fragments, two retaining flat oval heads and with shanks of possibly square tapered section, though the flaking of corrosion may confer an inauthentically square section entailing the loss of the actual metal surface. The form of the more complete nails corresponds to Manning’s very common Type 1b/Inchtuthil Type E, which made up 87.3% of the nails from a hoard of 800,000 nails recorded from Inchtuthil fort on Hadrian’s Wall.
