A rim sherd or Roman Swanpool/Cantley type mortarium. The oxidised orange fabric has white slip, slag trituration grit on the inside and the rim has a bead and rounded flange. The diameter of the vessel would have been 270mm and the weight is 94.60g. A published comparison can be found in Darling (1999, 110, Fig.43, No.585) and dates to late 3rd -4th century.

An incomplete and slightly worn cast copper alloy Roman Polden Hill brooch. The long semi-tubular deep wings are concave behind and house a spring mechanism. The copper alloy axis bar is held by a rounded pierced lug at the end of each wings and the worn spring has fourteen turns and possibly had a missing rearward claw. The wings are decorated with a knurled rib and the head has a crest with a moulded appendage on either side. Both the wings and head are covered with a thin layer of iron corrosion. Probably an incomplete cast copper alloy Roman bow and fantail brooch. Behind the rectangular head is a semi cylindrical moulding with central slot for the missing hinged pin mechanism. Iron corrosion on the head and wings suggests that the pin mechanism may have been iron. On top of the head is an incomplete integral chain loop. The short rectangular bow steps down to a worn and incomplete triangular leg at a midway point. The surviving length is 27.0mm, the width is 15.3mm and the weight is 2.82g.

The tip of the head has an asymmetrically set notch, the sides of which are folded back to secure the pin hinge, one side of which is missing. A Roman rim sherd, from a triangular rimmed dish with external burnished lattice decoration. It is definitely a product of the Roxby kiln industry as it has small fragments of brown ironstone in its fabric visible under magnification. The form can be directly paralleled to an example published by Rigby and Stead from the kiln site (1976, Fig 67. 53, Roxby Form P). It is a local copy of a black burnished ware form commonly produced in the south of England and should be dated to AD150-230.
