Object type: PIN
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast copper alloy Bronze Age Quoit headed pin. The ring is oval but is slightly pointed where it joins the circular-sectioned pin shaft. It has an ‘H’ section which measures c. 5.0mm x 2.3mm and blends smoothly into the pin. This ‘H’ section appears to have been formed by hammering the edges of the ring section to raise them into the flanges. These flanges are decorated with notches on both sides of the ring. The slightly bent shaft is now about 45° off the plain of the ring. The length is 144.0mm, the diameter of the ring is 66.1mm x 60.0mm and the weight is 29.11g.

Copper alloy Ring fragment. About half of a cast round-section ring, slightly flattened buy hammering on its upper and lower surfaces. Copper alloy Miniature axe or axe-chisel. Cast flat tapering blade, resembling a miniature version of the earliest and simplest solid cast copper alloy axe-heads. The sides are slightly indented, the blade curved and perhaps thinned by sharpening, while the butt end is thin. Antiquarian discoveries suggest these objects might be hafted with a handle set at the narrower end. A function as a chisel or a leatherworking blade is possible, though the broad flat tang would tend to split a handle.
