Object type: SPOON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy spoon fragment. A cast elongated oval or leaf-shaped spoon bowl, broken from the stem at its proximal end, and retaining extensive traces of white metal plating. The finder kindly cites Roman WILT-2E4F64 as a parallel; however this example lacks the 'rat tail' continuation of the stem noted on the Wiltshire object. The use of both copper alloy and white metal plating may suggest this to have been made after metalworkers' craft guilds had lost the power to prevent the manufacture of spoons in white or yellow metals which might be passed off as being of better materials. Copper alloy buckle fragment. The cast offset strap bar of a small buckle frame clasped by a folded rectangular sheet metal plate of thickness 0.9mm. An off-centre rivet hole of diameter 1.3mm appears towards the inner end of the plate on one side. A small oval hole by the frame was presumably to permit a pin [now lost] to protrude. The rounded segments bear traces of closely-spaced longitudinal grooves. Broken at both ends and fiercely abraded. The finder kindly cites LANCUM-F0B515 as a similar find of Middle Bronze Age date. The beaded form of bracelet also appears throughout the Iron Age, though rarely bearing the transverse decoration observed here. Suggested date: Middle Bronze Age,1600-…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a tapered moulded aperture of diameter 9.5-10mm, Walton Rogers form A1; heavily patinated and abraded. Lead lid handle, as kindly suggested by the finder. Lead weight, as kindly identified by the finder. Cast annular weight with a central moulded aperture of diameter 11mm. Shrinkage lines around the hole on one side suggest this was cast in an open mould. Though the form is identical to that of a cylindrical spindle whorl, the grey tint of the metal argues for a more recent date, and the mass exceeds that of almost all spindle whorls, whether intended for spinning yarn or plying cords. The function was perhaps, though, comparable, probably as a flywheel from light machinery. Suggested date: Post-Medieval to Modern, 1850-1950 Diameter: 3…

Copper alloy and iron furniture fitting.
