A glass bead which is possibly Roman. The bead is annular and is D shaped in section with a circular hole in the centre. On one face the centre is depressed, but the other face is flat. A short spur projects from one edge of the bead. The glass contains faint lines that radiate from the spur as if the glass was pulled up to form it, or was poured down from it. The spur narrows from the edge of the bead to the end which is flat and truncated. The bead measures 19.3mm long, 18.1mm wide and 6.4mm thick. The glass is opaque and is very pale blue in colour. Annular beads were popular in th…

2 bone beads of probable prehistoric date. The beads are rather rudimentary; though well polished, they are undecorated, subcylindrical, and asymmetrical in form. It is difficult to determine the skeletal element from which they were made; the subcylindrical form could be manufactured from the phalanges of a large mammal, the longbones (e.g. metapodials) of a smaller mammal, or the tines of a deer antler. However, the disorganised microstructure of the objects, together with the presence of secondary osteones (visible under low powered microscopy) shows that postcranial bone was used…

A glass bead, possibly dating to the early medieval period -therefore Anglo Saxon. The bead is circular in shape and has a hole through the centre. The bead measures 19.82mm x 8.45mm. It weighs 3.84g. The bead would have been made by melting glass into a crucible. Then an iron rod would have been used to gather the glass. The glass was then trickled onto the rod, forming the central hole and then it would have been rolled, to smooth the outer surface. The manufacture of glass beads is exampled fully in Leahy (2003) see reference below. The bead is blue, with a light blue spiral into th…

Glass bead; Flat, circular bead of matt, transluscent, pale green glass. The bead is a thick disc with rounded edges and a very small, circular hole through the centre. It is not of an even thickness, narrowing towards one side (which would presumably be the top when the bead was strung as it would be lighter than the thicker side). The bead is polished smooth over its surface with a few chips missing from the narrower side.
