A silver medieval cut halfpenny attributed to the baronial coinage of William of Aumale, Earl of York, produced during the reign of Stephen (1135-1154) and dating to c. AD 1150, probably struck in York.  The design showing a knight advancing right with sword on the obverse, and a cross patée in quatrefoil with annulets on cusps and in margin on the reverse is known mostly from pennies of Eustace FitzJohn (North 929). Copper alloy buckle. Cast sub-rectangular frame with an expanded outer edge retaining a sheet metal roller with butted seam and with a narrowed and offset strap bar which is clasped by a narrow folded and slotted buckle plate of thickness 0.9mm and of symmetrical trapezoid form, narrowed towards its inner end. The stub of a rectangular pin remains looped round the strap bar. A single rivet of diameter 2mm and length 2.8mm passes through the inner end of the plate. Suggested date: Late Medieval, 1350-1400 Length: 30.7mm, Height: 12.7mm, Thickness (at roller): 3.7mm, Weight: 2.61gms
