A small flint blade, possibly a fragment of a larger blade. It is perhaps Neolithic in origin, coming as it does, from the Walton Basin in Wales. The bulb of percussion has been removed and there are signs of re-work to the adjacent edges. The dorsal surface has a single ridge/lateral edge which divides into 2 as it extends to the upper edge in the photograph. The ventral surface has percussion ripples along with edge fissures at one end. The material is a pale cream flint with several minute inclusions with a larger pale inclusion that terminates with a dark edge on the dorsal ridg…

A lithic flake/implement of probable Neolithic origin. This artefact has the look of a blade, with the remnants of a diffuse bulb of percussion and the conventional dorsal/ventral surfaces. The dorsal surface has a number of negative scars from earlier removal with fissures and abundant concoidal scarring to both long edges. The long edges are, however, quite steep and there is also retouch on the ventral surface at the distal end. The material is a dark brown/grey flint with numerous inclusions of both darker and lighter material.

A Neolithic flint implement in the form of a blade or knife, with both long edges having been re-touched. The ventral surface has a bulb of percussion with faint rippling beneath. The dorsal surface has central ridge with numerous scars to the remaining surface. The convex edge has normal re-touch. The opposite edge has been fashioned into a double denticulate or serrated working edge. The material is a dark brown flint with a multitude of pale cream/white inclusions, some of which may be organic in nature.

A flint implement of Neolithic origin. The flint appears to have been broken in two with the remaining section missing the bulbar scar but retaining the typical ripple effect to the ventral surface, running down to the distal end. The dorsal surface has a central ridge with a secondary ridge formed by flake removal. Both long edges have normal re-touch and thus, this was probably a blade. However, the distal end would seem to indicate that the piece was re-worked and fashioned into a drill bit. The point is now rounded and the convex edges of the bit have conchoidal scars/bi-facial …

A triangulate worked flint blade of Neolithic origin (3500-2100BC). The ventral surface has a small bulb of percussion with faint trace of the percussion ripples across the surface. The dorsal side has a single lateral edge/dorsal ridge, running the length of the blade with dorsal scarring along much of its length. The cutting edge is formed on the slightly convex side with direct parallel retouch, some of which looks to have been damaged through the passage of time. The material is a multi coloured (pale cream/brown/red) and partly translucent flint with numerous inclusions of ferr…

A flint blade, triangular in cross-section, probably Neolithic in date. This piece has a good bulb of percussion with a surface ripple running down the ventral side. The dorsal side has a predominant single ridge and dorsal scarring to much of its surface. The material is a mid grey/brown flint.

This is a fine example of a lithic tool with a well defined blade in the ‘backed knife’ style. The material is a mottled tan flint, probably Neolithic in origin. It may reasonably be considered a blade/knife due to a cutting edge length, more than three times its width. From the proximal end, there is a clear bulb of percussion with undulating percussion ripples from the bulb, running down the ventral surface to the feather termination at the distal end. The cutting surface has a length of 5.75mm and there is a conchoidal fracture to the back edge. The dorsal surface is marke…

This is a particularly interesting example of a tertiary lithic tool, or interior flake, lacking as it does any sign of the cortex. The material is opaque mottled pale cream and has a fine microcrystalline structure with apparent mineral inclusions; the surface has the waxy lustre of chalcedony. The ventral surface exhibits a delaminated or, exfoliation area which may be the result of a fault within the structure of the material. It has a longitudinal length of approximately 2.5 times its width and may thus be considered a ‘blade’. Due to the relative 'bluntness' of the back s…

A small blade, possibley a burin / boring tool, formed on a pale grey coloured flint. The point of percussion is on the narrow pointed end. The dorsal face shows signs of retouching on one short side only, and has a small crested central ridge with shallow angled sides. This suggests it may be a combination blade / boring tool. Their is a good patination to the flint. The size and form of the tool suggests a later Mesolithic date - however it was found amongst a scatter of flints dating to the mid to late Neolithic date. The flint measures 35.5mm length, 22.71mm width, is 4.38mm…

A blade, possibly a burin / boring tool, formed on a mid grey coloured flint. The point of percussion is on the narrow pointed end. The ventral face shows signs of minor retouching on both the longer sides, the dorsal face has 1 central ridge and shallow angled sides with cortex remaining with retouching on the same faces as the ventral side plus tertiary retouching to the tip. This suggests it may be a combination blade / boring tool. The shape suggests that it may be the distal end of a larger blade but the patination on the sheared steep faced end would age the break to occuring in…

Two small flint Blades, The smaller flake is pale brown and shows primary working and small amount of indentines to the tip. The larger blade is pale grey and shows both primary and secondary retouching and may have been longer as there is a break width ways across the wider end. A Neolithic date 2900 - 1800 BC may be suggested as similar dated debitage and tools have been found in the immidiate vicinity. The small blade measures 12 x 9.76 x 1.75mm and weighs 0.22 gm. The large blade measures 24.48 x 12.1 x 3mm and weighs 0.75 gm

This is a lithic blade of Neolithic origin. There is a diffuse bulb of percussion at the proximal end with limited undulating ripple. The dorsal surface has a prominent ridge that bisects into two ridges, approximately halfway down the length of the blade and running to the distal edge The edges have original sub-parallel retouch but then have what might be considered as ‘new’ retouch at some later date that cuts through the pale cream surface of the original work. However, it is entirely possible that the ‘new’ retouch is simply damage from its long life in the soil. The …
