A possible Neolithic (c.4000-c.2350 BC) axe haft made of deer antler. Overall the object measures 296mm long, 74mm wide and 50mm thick. Dr Kevin leahy says: 'It could be an axe haft, someone seems to have gone to the trouble of hollowing out the cancellous interior of the antler to form a socket which has the right sort of section. I know of axes being placed in antler sockets mounted on wooden hafts from the Neolithic Lakeside villages in Switzerland but nothing from the UK. I am a bit worried by the straight cut termination at the distal end of the antler beam as I don't know ho…

Object type: PICK
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Neolithic - Bronze Age (4,000 - 1,200BC) antler pick. This pick has been constructed from the tip of an antler tine. There is a cut surface across the butt and there is a triangular chip missing; this is probably post depositional damage. A hole has been drilled near the butt to accommodate the haft. The hole has cylindrical sides. There are very distinctive cut marks which indicate a flint tool was used to cut the tine and work on the hole. There is some wear and polishing around the hole which is related to the movement of the haft. The polishing around the tip would part…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC

The upper part of a human skull in very good condition and stained dark brown. The fragment is almost certainly of prehistoric date. Emily Brants reports: The remains consist of the frontal bone from the skull of an adult male human. The age of the individual cannot be attributed any more accurately, due to the lack of aging indicators (e.g. teeth or corresponding skull bones with sutures etc). The skull is probably male, due to the prominent supraorbital ridge and the blunt angle of the superior margin of the orbits. The bone has the appearance of beginning to fossilise, as it has lo…

Object type: POINT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Prehistoric, probably Neolithic – Iron Age bone point (3500BC – 100AD). This point has been made from a metatarsal (hind foot) possibly from a cervid. The bone’s morphology has been used to give this point its triangular fluted cross-section. The bone was shaped using a flint tool leaving characteristic striations. It has snapped at an angle across the shaft. Alan Pipe suggests that it snapped during use rather than post deposition. Dimensions: length: 159.83mm; width: 11.65mm; thickness: 11.05mm; weight: 19.76g.

A Prehistoric, probably Neolithic – Bronze Age bone point or awl (3500-800BC). A bone from a sheet/goat has been worked to from this point/awl. The tip of the point is broken and has the same dark staining as the rest of the surface suggesting the damage occurred in antiquity. Dimensions: length: 97.56mm; width: 12.47mm; thickness: 6.38mm; weight: 5.45g.

A Neolithic or Bronze Age macehead, carved from the basal area of a red deer (Cervus elaphus) antler. The porous core of the antler has been removed, so as to form a hollow cylinder that could easily be hafted to a handle. A large transverse hole (diameter 24.9mm)has been bored through the antler beam, so that it crosses the hollowed out core, and emerges through the cortex on the other face. This perforation is almost perfectly circular, and must have been done with a purpose-made tool. Notably, the edges of the perforation are smooth, relatively sharp, and show no evidence of wea…
