Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete stone axehead of Neolithic date (4000-2350 BC). The lithic is bi-convex and sub-rectangular in profile, with a smooth ground surface and tapered ground curvilinear (incomplete) cutting edge. The portion of the axe situated directly behind the cutting edge remains predominantly intact, however, the integrity of the lithic reduces sharply past the mesial point. Large and deep negative scars have removed a portions of the ground surface of the axehead, significantly more on one side of the object, and are most probably due to post depositional processes. The break situated …

A complete flint disk scraper of Neolithic date (3500-2350 BC). The lithic is sub-ovate in profile and bi-concave in section. The dorsal surface contains three predominant negative scars and corresponding arrises. All edges contain partial, parallel flaking and semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface is smooth and concave. The flint is light grey in colour with cream and dark inclusions throughout.

A complete flint thumbnail scraper or Neolithic date (4000-2350 BC). The lithic is sub-ovate in profile and plano-convex in profile. The dorsal surface has two predominant negative scars with corresponding negative arrises. The proximal edge has been abruptly blunted, all other edges contain partial parallel flaking and semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface is smooth with a small, shallow negative scar situated along the proximal left hand edge. The flint is mid-grey in colour with cream inclusions throughout.

A complete knapped lithic implement of Neolithic date, circa 4000 - 2300 BC. The implement is a blade formed from a tertiary flake which is rectangular in plan with a D-shaped section. As its length is more than twice the width and the sides are more or less parallel, it is identifiable as a blade. A bulb of percussion remains along with radiating ripples. Semi-abrupt, short, parallel retouch is present along the left edge. The flint is a mid-grey colour. The implement is 57.8mm long, 25.5mm wide, 8.5mm thick and weighs 12.8g. Broad blades such as this are common in the early Me…

A complete knapped lithic implement of late Neolithic to early Bronze Age date, circa 2700 - 1600 BC. The implement is a notched scraper formed from a secondary flake which is Y-shaped in plan and sub-D-shape in section. Both surfaces are irregular and a strip of cortex is retained along the right edge. The curved or notched element which forms the Y-shape displays short, abrupt, scaled retouch. The lack of obvious striking platform and conchoidal fractures suggests this was a naturally shaped flake which was altered to create the notched scraping surface. The flint is a mid-to…

A complete knapped lithic implement of late Neolithic to early Bronze Age date, circa 2700 - 1600 BC. The implement is a notched scraper formed from a tertiary flake which is sub-ovate in plan and section. The ventral surface is mostly smooth displaying a bulb or percussion and bulbar scar from which ripples of percussion radiate. The dorsal surface is irregular with long flakes having been removed and a notch is present to the left mesial edge which displays short, abrupt, scaled retouch. The right-hand distal edge has been shaped into a point by spall removal perpendicular to the po…

A complete knapped lithic implement of late Neolithic to early Bronze Age date, circa 2700 - 1600 BC. The implement is a notched scraper formed from a secondary flake which is L-shaped with a triangular section. The ventral surface is mostly smooth though detail is obscured by a sticker added by the finder. The dorsal surface is irregular with numerous small flake removals at opposing angles. The right mesial edge displays short, abrupt, scaled retouch in the formation of the notch. The flint is a dark brown to black colour with small irregular patches of remaining cortex on the su…
