An incomplete knapped, ground and polished stone axehead of late Neolithic date, c. 2700 - 2300 BC. The axehead is formed of a fine grained red/brown stone. The axehead is sub-ovate in plan; narrower at the butt end with sides which widen to the crescentic cutting edge. The axe has a slight humped profile and a regular oval cross section. A large transverse break is present to one surface. The blade end exhibits prominent crescentic polished facets to both sides reflecting how the cutting edge has been ground and sharpened. It is impossible to source axes such as these wi…

An almost complete knapped, ground and polished flint axehead of late Neolithic date, c. 2700 - 2300 BC. The axehead is formed of an orange/brown flint with larger pale inclusions and small dark inclusions; probably a North Sea type flint. The axehead is sub-ovate in plan; narrower at the butt end with sides which gradually widen to the crescentic cutting edge. The axe has a slight humped profile and a regular oval cross section. The sides have three distinctive polished facets creating a slightly angled appearance with visible striations. The blade end exhibits prominent …

A fragment probably from the blade end of a polished stone axehead of Neolithic date (c. 4000 - 2350 BC). The fragment appears to be the corner of the blade end of the axehead, with a diagonal break at the top end of the fragment. A further horizontal break is evident at the base of the fragment. A section of the tapered cutting edge is evident with ground and polished sides. The axehead is made of a fine grained igneous rock, possibly dolerite, and is rough with quartz inclusions. The fragment is 55.6mm in length, 34.1mm in width, and has a thickness of 22.6mm. The weight is 61.2 …

An incomplete polished flint axehead of Neolithic date, c. 4000-2350 BC. The axehead is bi-convex and has a sub-rectangular profile and a pointed oval section. It has a smooth ground surface and a tapered ground curvilinear cutting edge. The axehead terminates at a blunt break part-way along its length. The break bears traces of the same cream discolouration as the outer surfaces, suggesting that the break is old. Small flakes have been lost from both surfaces of the axehead, and one large flake has been lost from the edge of one surface, at the narrowest part of the axehead. The a…

A fragment of a Neolithic stone axehead, dating to the period c.3500 - 2100 BC. The axehead is lenticular in cross-section and semi-circular in plan, with a break along its straight edge. Therefore most of the body and the butt end are missing. It narrows in thickness towards the blade, which is now very worn and has pieces missing. Chips are also present in the stone along the broken edge. The axehead fragment measures 63.67mm in length, 40.92mm in width, 20.87mm in thickness at its broken end and weighs 82g. The axe is comprised of a grey-green fine-grained siliceous tuff - a …

A complete though probably unfinished stone axehead of Neolithic date. The axehead is trapezoidal in plan with a pointed ovate section. The surfaces are rough with a chip to one side of the cutting edge and two smaller chips along one long side. A complete knapped lithic implement of late Neolithic date, circa 2700 - 2100 BC. The axehead is sub-ovate in plan and pointed ovate in section. The implement has been bi-facially worked with flaking over all surfaces and appears to have been struck from various directions. The edges have been more extensively worked with fine shallow retouch creating the cutting edge. The flint is a mid mottled grey colour with abundant lighter inclusions. The axehead is 102.5mm long, 44.9mm to 22.4mm wide, 17.3mm thick and weighs 97g.

White flint (patinated overall) polished axe fragment. Flint axe comprising a sub-ovoid axe head with one straight side, possibly from an ancient break. The flint bears either large hard hammer flake removal scars or similarly abrupt damage over all other areas except that near the cutting edge, and these confer the appearance of a particularly graceless Mesolithic Seamer-style axe. However, the cutting edge is curved and finely polished on both sides, and this feature commends a Neolithic date. It remains uncertain whether most flaking post-dated the polished finishing of the axe, as…

An incomplete stone axehead of Neolithic date (4000-2350 BC). The lithic is bi-convex and sub-rectangular in profile, with a smooth ground surface and tapered ground curvilinear (incomplete) cutting edge. The portion of the axe situated directly behind the cutting edge remains predominantly intact, however, the integrity of the lithic reduces sharply past the mesial point. Large and deep negative scars have removed a portions of the ground surface of the axehead, significantly more on one side of the object, and are most probably due to post depositional processes. The break situated …

An incomplete stone axehead of Neolithic date, circa 3500 - 2100 BC. Both the butt and cutting edge of the axehead no longer remain leaving only the middle section of the object. The surviving portion is trapezoidal in plan and sub-oval in section with extensive damage to both ends. The undamaged surface of the axehead is smooth and polished with rounded sides and edges though a number of shallow scratches are present and were probably caused by modern agricultural practices. The right edge tapers smoothly from the ventral and dorsal surface to join in a sharp pointed edge while the left edge has not been so heavily worked and the two surfaces are joined by a wide right angled edge. A Neolithic axe (or possibly an adze). The axe dates from between circa 3500 BC to 2100 BC. The implement has been extensively knapped and highly polished into a sub-oval shape. The stone is a fine-grained volcanic ash probably from the Lake District. One terminal is slightly pointed; the other (the butt) is rounded. The butt end has been damaged and a large chunk has been removed, this probably happened relatively recently. No natural cortex is visible on the surface of the axe. The rounded butt end of the axe or adze has been finely knapped, to form a sharp and precise cutting edg…

Polished or ground stone axehead fashioned from a light greyish-green coarse stone. Neolithic, circa 3500 to 2100 BC, possibly a Langdale greenstone axe. Oval in section, tapered towards both rounded cutting edge and squared butt end. The axe has some minor later damage, and some chips in the cutting edge. The axe is unsual in that it is divided into two areas - a polished half at the cutting edge end, and a rough, pitted half at the butt end. The two areas are clearly defined, and almost certainly deliberate (the pitting is perhaps to provide the butt with better grip).
