Pale grey flint barbed and tanged arrowhead. Arrowhead bearing covering angled scalar retouch across both sides, with two long cutting edges converging at a sharp and intact point, with two small barbs flanking a slightly broader tang at its wider end. The long edges are finely serrated as a result of the finishing, which would make them very effective for use as a hunting arrowhead intended to promote blood loss from a stricken quarry. The fir-tree form and fine finish recalls a series of lozengiform points from East Yorkshire round barrows which, though perhaps typologically project…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Pale buff flint possible knife fragment. Perhaps one half of a thin oval flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a flat or very slightly concave ventral surface. A long narrow flake is struck from along a putative cutting edge. The form might also suggest an over-sized barbed and tanged arrowhead, though the concave ventral surface would probably interfere with flight if it were so deployed. Milky patina suggests the object to have endured exposure to a calcareous environment; the break or breaks [a smaller break appears at the base/butt end] is more recent. Sugge…

Pale grey flint scraper with cortex, possibly collected from the East Coast, scraper, as kindly identified by the finder. Oval flake with a bulb on its ventral surface, and with cortex trimmed by angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect to follow the curving edge, and also to lightly trim a butt opposite the putative working edge. This was followed by the development of a milky patina suggesting the object has been exposed to a calcareous environment. The patina is locally removed by adventitious recent chips. Pale grey flint with re-formed cortex, possibly collected from the East Coast, scraper, as kindly identified by the finder. Oval pebble with angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curved edge; cortex is left untrimmed along a flatter side to serve as a butt enabling pressure to be brought to bear on the working edge. The ventral surface is bulbar. Milky patina suggests the object was subsequently exposed to a calcaraeous environment. Dark grey flint with possibly re-former cortex, possibly collected from the East Coast; scraper. An oval flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a convex ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curving edge, with the area of cortex retained as a butt. A fresh grey tint to the flint may suggest this object has recently been disturbed from a sealed context. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 28.9mm, Width: 27.5mm, Thickness: 8.8mm, Weight: 9.01gms

Flint possible scraper. A trapezoid flake with broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a lightly convex ventral surface. An angled wedge-shaped end was perhaps formed by hard hammer strike executed from the dorsal aspect, and the grooves formed by the initial working may have afforded a thumb rest were this a working face. Dense creamy patina suggests the object has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment. It has subsequently been water-rolled. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 69mm, Width: 36.4mm, Thickness: 12.3mm, Weight: 37.00gms

Flint possible scraper. A flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side, a positive hinge fracture at its narrower end, and with a slightly concave ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one end edge. Subsequently chipped around its edges. Dense creamy patina and light orange staining may suggest the object has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment, possibly followed by its incorporation into gravels. Flint scraper. A small irregular flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side, and with a bulbar ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect forms a curving lightly hollowed edge on one side, with similar treatment of a shorter adjacent side. A dense creamy patina suggest the object has subsequently endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment, while light orange spotting may hint at its subsequent incorporation into gravels. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 26.9mm, Width: 24.5mm, Thickness: 7mm, Weight:…
