Cast copper alloy bead. The bead is circular in plan and hexagonal in section being bi-conical. It is of regular thickness with the circular perforation centrally set. There is raised band running around the bead, flanked to either side by a narrow circumfral groove. A circumfral groove also runs around the perforation to each side. No casting seam is visible. The original surface survives mostly intact with a dark green patina, with areas of damage and wear showing as lighter green. The bead has a diameter of 14.42mm, is 10.22mm thick and weighs 6.04g. Beads are difficult to date, …

A fragment of a glass annular bead. Only about quarter of the bead survives. It is 15.3mm long, 7.2mm wide and 5.6mm thick. It is sub-circular in section and would have had a radius of about 9mm. The bead is made of dark blue glass and is decorated with five trailed then smoothed circumferential bands of white glass. There is also a pinkish substance on the side of the central hole. Beads with similar decoration on the database are LEIC-70C974 and LEIC-8B5E97. It is very difficult to date glass beads as they were used throughout the Iron Age, Roman and Early Medieval periods.

A copper-alloy bead. Several such beads are recorded on the PAS database. Dating of such artefacts is difficult; however, the profile of this example is reminiscent of larger harness rings, similar examples to which were found in a late Iron Age to early Roman period assemblage of metalwork at Camerton, Somerset - see Jackson, 1990, p. 49 and database records BH-11AEC2 and BH-5ECDA1. The bead is ring-shaped, with a large central apeture. The profile is sub-triangular, with a central ridge extending around the circumference of the ring and, marking each of the two outer edges, a lowe…

A glass bead of unknown date. The bead is sub-spherical with flattened ends and a central hole. The bead is made of blue glass and is in fair condition, with a pitted surface. Beads of this style were used from the Iron Age until the medieval period and beyond and so are impossible to date. This blue colour was popular in the 1st-3rd centuries, but could also be from an Anglo Saxon context.

A gilt copper-alloy bead of possible late Iron Age to early Roman date. This bead was found in close proximity to a similar (although not gilt) bead - see BH-431B44. The artefact is ring-shaped, the central aperture having become filled with a copper-alloy corrosion product. The ring is sub-triangular in profile, with a low ridge extending around the centre of the outer surface, which is heavily gilt. One of the bands created by this ridge bears relief decoration in the form of four pairs of triangular ornaments. In each pair the points of the triangles meet and the centre and there…

A copper-alloy ring of uncertain date and function. Such artefacts are relatively common finds and probably served a variety of functions. The small size of this piece suggests it may be a bead. The patination indicates a possible Iron Age to Roman date. The ring has a convex outer surface and slightly flattened inner surfaces. The diameter decreases significantly at one point, possibly as a result of wear. The surfaces bear possible traces of a white-metal coating and are corroded. The artefact measures 15.2mm in diameter, 4.7mm thick and weighs 3.49g.

Large copper alloy biconical bead. 20m in diameter and 19mm high. The hole has a diameter of 8mm at the top and 5mm at the bottom. To date, 213 copper alloy beads have ben recorded on this database, with varying dates. Biconical beads similar in form to this one have been given an Iron Age date. They are similar in size and shape to Roman faience melon beads, and so a Late Iron Age date may be likely. Beads similar to this one can be found at IOW-A7EE12, CAM-8147F6 and ESS-FAFDF4.

This is a good example of a blue glass annular bead and given the deep cobolt blue of the main body of the ring and its diameter at 20mm, it is probably from the Roman period. The glass has been decorated with an opaque white wavy line and this is typical of the type (wave-decorated beads) as described in Margaret Guido's 'The Glass Beads of the Prehistoric and Roman Periods'. In particular, this example fits within the group 5 type 10d style. The central hole is a little irregular and is slightly off centre. The diameter of the hole is 9mm.

Iron Age/Romano-British possible bead: cast object with asymmetrically placed perforation and hoop of widely divergent thickness and width. Wear or damage has led to loss of a small part of the edge where the metal was very thin. The object closely resembles the lipped moulding characteristic of transverse-wing terrets, e.g. Hutcheson 2004 no.117. The piece bears some resemblance to several small unidentified objects from Burlingham found in the 1980s (HER 18299). Diameter 11mm. Width 5 - 10mm. Thickness 1 - 5mm.
