A glass bead of unknown date. The bead is sub-spherical with flattened ends and a central hole. The bead is made of blue glass and is in fair condition, with a pitted surface. Beads of this style were used from the Iron Age until the medieval period and beyond and so are impossible to date. This blue colour was popular in the 1st-3rd centuries, but could also be from an Anglo Saxon context.

A complete glass bead of Guido Group 5; Type 10d, dating to the Late Iron Age to mid Roman period (c. BC 150-AD 300). The bead is annular in shape with a large central perforation. The bead is a dark blue or cobalt semi-translucent colour with white decorative swirling, formed of a zig zag pattern, across the outer surface. The white decoration would have been formed through trailing hot white glass on the surface of the bead when it was still hot. Then a technique referred to as marvering, in which the hot outer surface of the bead with decoration was pressed against a cold and sm…

The bead is a circular shape in plan, with a regular rounded edge in profile, Guido describes the shape as 'thick annular'. It has a central hole which is straight and sub-circular in cross section. The background colour of the bead is a dark blue colour which is decorated with white spiral which starts near the centre of one face and continues around the bead, but forming sub-concentric rings on the opposite face. On the less decorated face, evenly spaced around the hole are three small sub-circular indentations which maybe part of the manufacturing process or accidental.

A fragment of a glass annular bead. Only about quarter of the bead survives. It is 15.3mm long, 7.2mm wide and 5.6mm thick. It is sub-circular in section and would have had a radius of about 9mm. It was made by mixing two strands of blue and white glass, and then wrapping the glass around a thin metal rod (the hole left by the rod has a diameter of 3.2mm); the glass mixture was then dragged this way and that around the rod, to mix up the patterns on the surface. Tiny blobs of yellow glass were then added fairly uniformly around the sides; onto each blob was added an even smaller one of red glass. The whole bead was then heated and rolled on a smooth su…
