A fragment of a corroded medieval iron knife encircled by a decorative silver band. The slightly bent band is inscribed with the letters QVI: HON: D (The N is reversed). The inscription is contained within a beaded border. The band may have formed a decorative collar around the wooden handle of a small knife. The length is 11.8mm, the width is 9.6mm and the weight is 2.39g. (Description adapted from J P Robinson's BM Curators Report).

Object type: KEY (LOCKING)
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North East Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Iron key. Rotary key for a door, with oval bow, stem of square section - though this may arise from the flaking of corrosion - which protrudes as a more rounded spike from the bit, which bears a single cleft expanded horizontally at the mid-point of bit. The form was long-lasting; the bow is oval rather than kidney-shaped, which may hint at a later date. Suggested date: Late Medieval, 1350-1500.
Length: 143.9mm, Width (bow): 45.7mm, Thickness: 8.3mm, Weight: 67.84gms.

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Iron unknown object. Rod of square section, tapering from one end which is expanded in width but not in its thickness, towards a diamond-shaped or hexagonal pointed knop. It is possible this may be a handle, though the use of iron would be unusual for implements such as spoons. The terminal knop suggests the date offered. Suggested date: Medieval: 1200-1500.

Broad period: UNKNOWN

Iron chain links. Two oval chain links of wrought iron, of apparently rectangular section. Each link is narrowed by wear at its ends. The links are also slightly bowed, apparently in alternating directions which suggests this is a deliberate aspect of construction rather than damage arising from wear. Suggested date: Unknown, Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1200-1800. Length (both links): 107.61mm, Width: 33.4mm, Thickness: 5.6mm, Weight: 30.87gms

Iron possible shears blade fragment. Wrought iron, tapering strip of flattened plano-convex section, with a narrower edge possibly representing a cutting edge and a thicker edge which may represent the back of a blade. Given this is an iron object, the relatively good condition may suggest it to be of high quality metal. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800.

Iron knife blade fragment. Wrought iron; sub-triangular fragment of V-section, tapering towards a slightly angle-backed tip. The cutting edge of the blade is slightly wavy, probably from recurrent sharpening. The blade may also be slightly twisted at its tip, though this may merely be the effect of differential corrosion. The angle-backed form is typical of medieval whittle tanged knives. The thickness in particular is presumably exaggerated by corrosion products.Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1400.

Iron
Object, function unknown. Flat sub-triangular fragment; this object lacks the V-section which would indicate it to be part of a blade. In relatively uncorroded condition so possibly steel rather than iron. Suggested date: Roman to Post-Medieval, 40-1800.
