Workflow stage: Published
Fragment from a polished stone axehead of Neolithic date (c. 4000 - 2350 BC), made from stone from Langdale, Cumbria. The fragment is light green in colour, with a smooth polished surface. The fragment seems to be from the butt end of the axehead; a small section of tapered edge from the butt end is evident, as well as one side edge. Much of the original face survives on one side but is largely missing on the other. Overall, the axehead appears to have been pointed oval in section. The fragment is 38.47mm in length, 47.89mm in width and 17.93mm in thickness. It weighs 36.59g.

Workflow stage: Published
Fragment probably from the blade end of a polished stone axehead of Neolithic date (c. 4000 - 2350 BC). The fragment appears to be the corner of the blade end of the axehead, with a diagonal break at the top of the fragment. A section of the tapered curved cutting edge is evident and a side edge, which is set at an angle suggestive that the object flared towards the blade edge. Enough can be made out to infer that the overall section of the object would have been oval. The stone is rough with quartz inclusions. The fragment is 52.61mm in length, 25.86mm in width and 24.49mm in thickne…

Workflow stage: Published
A fragment of a Neolithic stone axehead, dating to the period c.3500 - 2100 BC. The axehead is lenticular in cross-section and semi-circular in plan, with a break along its straight edge. Therefore most of the body and the butt end are missing. It narrows in thickness towards the blade, which is now very worn and has pieces missing. Chips are also present in the stone along the broken edge.
The axehead fragment measures 63.67mm in length, 40.92mm in width, 20.87mm in thickness at its broken end and weighs 82g.
The axe is comprised of a grey-green fine-grained siliceous tuff - a …

Workflow stage: Published
A complete knapped lithic implement of Neolithic date, circa 4000 - 2300 BC. The implement is a thumbnail scraper, designed to be held between the thumb and forefinger, formed from a tertiary flake which is D-shaped in plan and section. The ventral surface is smooth with visible ripples of percussion suggesting the hard hammer technique was used in its removal. The dorsal surface displays semi-abrupt, long, sub-parallel retouch around the distal edge and both sides.
The flint is a mid-grey colour. The implement is 28.5mm long, 25.8mm wide, 9.5mm thick and weighs 7g.

Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published
A complete knapped lithic implement of Neolithic date (circa 4000-2350BC). The implement is most likely a knife, although could be a small Neolithic hand-axe shaped implement known as an 'Ovate' dating to the Late Neolithic (3000-2350BC). However, the implement is not bifacially worked to the extent expected of an Ovate.
The implement appears to have been knapped from a primary flake, from which secondary and tertiary flakes have been removed from the ventral surface. The Dorsal face has been worked to remove cortex on the left medial edge, leaving a substantial amount on the right…

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published
A complete though probably unfinished stone axehead of Neolithic date. The axehead is trapezoidal in plan with a pointed ovate section. The surfaces are rough with a chip to one side of the cutting edge and two smaller chips along one long side. The crude shaping and unpolished nature of the object suggests it was not properly finished.
The axe fragment is 79.5mm long, 36.4mm wide, 18.1mm thick and weighs 200g.
The axe is comprised of a grey-green fine-grained siliceous tuff - a sedimentary volcanic rock possibly from the Great Langdale quarries in Cumbria. This stone was most p…

The distal and right hand edges have fine semi-abrupt retouch and the distal end and short parallel flake removal. The ventral surface is relatively smooth with a surviving bulb of percussion and striking platform while the dorsal surface is irregular with numerous flakes having been removed. Three distinct areas of cortex remain on the dorsal surface. Abrupt, short and parallel retouch is present along the distal edge forming the scraping surface.

Flint scraper of broad Neolithic date (4000 - 2200 BC). The flint is brown in colour and on each side the surface is patinated to white. It is sub-oval in plan and flat-elliptical in cross-section. There is covering, scaled, low angle, retouch to both the dorsal and ventral faces and some short, sub-parallel, semi-abrupt retouch round most of the edges. This retouching interrupts the patina suggesting the flint was reused at a later date. The flint is 24.3mm long x 27.9mm wide x 3.9mm thick and weighs 2.8g.
