Only a small amount of the vessel proper remains with most having been broken off. The breaks are very worn. There appears to be a makers stamp on the internal surface of the vessel though this is difficult to identify. The finder believes this example to be from either a Form 37 with curving sides or a Form 30 with vertical sides.

Glazed sherd from the rim of an extremely hard earthenware jar, jug or storage vessel of probable later medieval date (1350-1550). The sherd consists of both the rim and part of the broken sidewall. The rim is near vertical and the sidewall expands slightly before tapering. It is relatively large with unabraded edges. The fabric is a hard earthen ware which is almost plastic in structure (being very like stoneware); it is mica rich, having frequent grit-like inclusions. The fabric is a matt grey colour. A complete wheel-made vessel, date as yet unknown but probably post-medieval, possibly 16th - 18th century. The vessel is a large storage jar, part glazed (green) from the waist up - the lower half is unglazed. The vessel has two looped handles adhering to the rim and the neck - these are also glazed green. A thin yellow glaze continues a little way inside the vessel, where it changes to a clear glaze, almost as if there are layers of glazing. There is a possible mend in the clay - this is also glazed suggesting it happened during the manufacturing process. The vessel measures 310…

Rim sherd of a relatively thin walled coarseware pottery vessel. The sherd either dates to the Roman period (50 - 410) or the medieval period (1200-1500). From what remains it is more likely to be Roman in date and from the local ‘Severn Valley’ like wares, but the style of the rim is unusual being relatively thick and flared, rather than everted as in most Roman vessels. The fabric is relatively soft with a number of angular and sub-angular quartz, grit and ironstone inclusions. The fabric also contains considerable inclusions of mica / sand. The fabric colour is a uniform mid ora…

Pottery Sherd from a strap handle of oval section, in a pale sandy partially reduced fabric with tiny white, possibly calcareous, inclusions. The outer surface of the handle bears the degraded remains of pale green splashed glaze. These characteristics may ally this piece to the East Yorkshire Orangewares or Beverleyware II of 1250-1350, or an earlier version defined as Beverleyware I, current 1150-1250 (Watkins 1991, 80-90), though here possibly made south of the Humber in a local potting tradition.
