An incomplete Neolithic polished stone axehead. The green coloured axe is sub-triangular in plan and pointed oval in cross section. The axe tapers in thickness to the cutting edge, which is still very sharp. The tip of the butt end is missing and there are some small chips removed on both faces. The greenstone comes from Great Langdale in Cumbria. The surviving length is 97.7mm, the width at the cutting edge is 61.2mm, the thickness is 26.5mm and the weight is 220.0g.

An incomplete cast copper alloy Late Roman amphora-shaped strap end. The slightly curved undecorated leaf-shaped body narrows from the neck that has two kidney shaped holes suggesting amphora handles. The terminal of the body is now missing. At the top of the strap end are two integral perforated lugs representing a hinge type attachment. Through the centre of these are the remains of an iron pin. The surviving length is 54.1mm, the width is 18.8mm, the thickness of the body is 1.9mm and the thickness of the lugs is 7.7mm.

A complete cast copper alloy Bronze Age Quoit headed pin. The ring is oval but is slightly pointed where it joins the circular-sectioned pin shaft. It has an ‘H’ section which measures c. 5.0mm x 2.3mm and blends smoothly into the pin. This ‘H’ section appears to have been formed by hammering the edges of the ring section to raise them into the flanges. These flanges are decorated with notches on both sides of the ring. The slightly bent shaft is now about 45° off the plain of the ring. The length is 144.0mm, the diameter of the ring is 66.1mm x 60.0mm and the weight is 29.11g.

An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman disc brooch. The plain circular face bears concentric bands of a hard substance which may be solder. The central area of the disc is free of this material, but has two indentations that are likely to be casting defects. Around the edge of the disc is a narrow groove. On the back of the plate are two lugs for a hinged pin mechanism and a catch plate, both of which are cast integrally with the disc. The pin is missing but was made of iron. An complete cast copper alloy Medieval rotary key. The hollow tubular stem terminates with a collar of three mouldings and a circular bow. On either side of the bow are a number of spurs that could represent animal heads. The symmetrical rectangular bit has two clefts on each side and a cleft on the bottom. The length of the bit is 12.2mm, the width is 18.3mm and the thickness is 5.5mm. The external length of the bow is 23.5mm and the width is 17.9mm. The complete length of the key is 68.5mm, the diameter of the stem is 7.3mm and the weight is 27.39g.

An incomplete cast copper alloy Iron Age ring-headed pin of ‘swan’s neck type’. The ring head has an external diameter of 13.7mm and a rounded outer edge. The hole though the centre of the head has a diameter of 4.1mm and has an ‘hourglass’ form. The integral pin shaft is attached to the ring at a tangent and curves around a 5mm radius before straightening to form the 3.2mm diameter pin shaft. The end of the shaft is broken and shows some signs of bronze disease. The surviving length is 34.8mm, the thickness is 5.0mm and the weight is 5.87g.

The triangular pedant is slightly curved and is thickened at one corner, which probably expanded into an attachment loop, though this is now missing. One of the other corners has broken off. The face has incised decoration in the form of a St Andrew's cross executed with rocker arm decoration. Some traces of gilding survive around the cross. The surviving length is 28.4mm, the surviving with is 28.6mm, the thickness is 1.2mm and the weight is 5.44g.

A fragment of a cast copper alloy Roman headstud brooch. Behind the rectangular head are the remains of a hinged pin mechanism with a copper alloy axis bar and the remains of a copper alloy pin. The sides of the wings are stepped and decorated with blue enamel, most of which still survives. The bow is truncated at a semicircular point, which may have been where the headstud was housed. The surviving length is 13.3mm, the width is 16.0mm and the weight is 3.57g.

An almost complete cast copper alloy Medieval buckle and plate. The single loop oval buckle frame has an expanded outer edge with a pin rest and a narrowed and offset strap bar. Looped around the strap bar is a cast copper alloy pin. The rectangular copper alloy buckle plate is folded and recessed for the strap bar and has a slot for the pin. The plate has four of the five remaining copper alloy rivets. The back of the plate is lozenge shaped and between the plates is a surviving fragment of leather. The length is 44.9mm, the width is 24.3mm and the weight is 9.14g.

The flat leaf-shaped shaft tapers from the shoulders to the two incomplete points. A worn and incomplete cast copper alloy Early Medieval Anglo Saxon Cruciform brooch. The trapezoidal head plate has an incomplete wing on the left and the right one is missing. At the top of the head plate is an integral knob, which is flattened in section and domed in outline. The arched bow is carninated at the front and concave behind and the corners are faceted. The brooch is truncated at the base of the bow and the foot is missing. Behind the head plate is an incomplete single hinge. The surviving length is 45.9mm, the surviving width is 16.9mm and the weight is 10.24g.

Probably a cast lead disc pendant, of Post Medieval date. The circular disc is blank on the reverse except for a narrow incised transverse line. The front face is decorated in relief with a pseudo-nummular design. In the centre is an asymmetrical cross-potent with a central boss. In the arms of the cross are four heart-shaped devices made up of two strands. Around the edge of the disc is a fictitious inscription. A hole has been drilled through the disc leaving a burr on both sides. The diameter of the disc is 25.4mm, the thickness is 2.3mm and the weight is 18.33g.

The dorsal face has invasive scaled retouch mainly on the distal and right edge, though there is also some short retouch on the left edge. The ventral face is plain with a small bulb of percussion and the proximal end still has the striking platform. The length is 41.4mm, the width is 15.0mm, the thickness is 5.4mm and the weight is 4.88g.

Copper alloy Brooch. Dolphin Brooch, cast bow with abraded ridges on its crest, surmounting enclosed tubular wings with apparently open ends. A bow of rounded section tapers towards the stub of a catch-plate. It is not clear whether the wings conceal a fine spring, or whether a hinged pin protruded from a slot in the underside of the wings. The bow is bent sharply above catch-plate and the brooch abraded overall. Suggested date: Early Roman, 40-80. Length (as found): 28.02mm, Width (wings): 32.86mm, Thickness (crest of bow): 7.1mm, Weight: 14.47gms.

An interesting complete lead alloy object of a modern date. The object is in the form of two intertwined human figures, which were cast separately. The larger figure has one arm around the other’s waist; the other arm is bent around and raised to the face of its partner. The smaller figure has one arm around the waist of her partner and the other on his shoulders. Each of the figures has long, tendril-like legs, which are interlaced. The length of the object is 40.1mm, the width is 15.2mm, the thickness is 14.4mm and the weight is 32.29g.

An incomplete cast copper alloy unidentified Medieval object. The object is in the form of a plate shaped like three conjoined triangles, the tip of one being missing. The remaining tips have small double bosses on their upper surfaces. Between the triangles are integral circular loops. The face of the plate bears a series of crudely cut crossing lines. On the back of the plate is an integrally cast central boss (length 4.3mm), the top of which has been expanded to fit it to another object. The length is 42.9mm, the width is 58.8mm, the thickness is 3.0mm and the weight is 24.87g.

A Roman Amphora handle sherd. The handle is round in section with a slight ridge on the upper surface near the surviving upper junction with the neck. The lower joint to the body does not survive (dimensions L 140mm; W 90mm; T 48mm). The handle is from a large globular olive oil amphora type known as a Dressel 20 (DR 20) produced in the southern Spain/Portugal area at sites clustered around the Guadalquivir river valley. A mouth and body sherd fragment of a Late Medieval salt glazed stoneware bottle. The wheel thrown body has an applied round section handle and a groove around the neck, just below the mouth. The glossy grey glaze has only patches of a mid brown mottle glaze, which suggests that it belongs to the first half of the 16th century. The length is 160mm, the maximum diameter of the vessel would have been 160mm, the wall thickness is 7.2mm and the weight is 440g.

An incomplete Post Medieval lead alloy alnage cloth seal. Only the two inner discs of the four part seal survives, the two outer discs are missing. On one face is the bust of George I with the inscription GEORGI[VS REX] around the edge. On the opposite face is a shield with three fleur de lys inside. Around the edge of the shield should be a tax rate in pence, though this has worn off. The surviving diameter is 12.9mm, the width is 15.9mm and the weight is 2.59g.

An incomplete cast copper alloy Medieval Key. The oval-sectioned hollow shank is decorated on both sides with double incised zigzag lines. The elaborate quatrefoil bow has two stepped-collars below, the upper one of which has oblique grooves and a cusp in each angle of the quatrefoil. The incomplete bit has parallel channels, though two parts of the bit are missing. The length of the key is 97.9mm, the bow has a diameter of 31.5mm, the bit has a length of 26.4mm and a width of 25.1mm and the weight is 66.21g.

An incomplete Post Medieval copper alloy sheet book clasp. The slightly bent rectangular plate has an integral flat hook at one end, which has a thickness of 1.4 and a width of 4.1mm. The opposite expanded end is truncated and has three surviving rivet holes; one of which retains an iron rivet and the other two are incomplete. The front of the plate has some of the raised decoration surviving including two rows of pellets at the hook end and a flower with possibly a crown above it. The surviving length is 47.0mm, the maximum width is 16.6mm, the thickness is 1.2mm and the weight is 4.53g.

Cast single looped buckle frame with protruding lip with notched pin rest and offset pin bar, with a slotted sheet metal buckle plate attached; a rivet of diameter 1.6mm and length 2.8mm is set in one corner of the buckle plate, and the hole for the rivet in the opposite corner at the belt end is also visible. Suggested date: Late Medieval, 1350-1450. Length: 26.4mm, Height: 20.2mm, Thickness (at plate): 3.5mm, Weight: 2.81gms.

An incomplete cast copper alloy Medieval Cauldron leg. The sub rectangular leg is sub triangular in section and has a central vertical ridge on the front. Both sides at the base of the leg are truncated and at the apex are two projections, which would have attached the leg to the vessel. The surviving length is 58.1mm, the width is 41.5mm, the maximum thickness is 15.0mm and the weight is 58.84g.

A complete cast copper alloy Early Medieval Anglo Saxon strap end. The strap end is now curved along its long axis and the surface is badly eroded leaving the decoration standing proud. The front of the strap end is divided into panels with the main field being masked by two overlapping curves filled with billeted pattern. The strap end terminates with a devolved animal head and on the upper attachment end are two rivet holes. The lower edge of the reverse bears traces of iron corrosion. The length is 38.3mm, the width is 8.6mm, the thickness is 1.4mm and the weight is 2.58g.
