Copper alloy insole. A sheet metal plate of nearly straight-sided form with rounded ends, and retaining the marks from the heads [5.5mm diameter ] of two small nails on either side at one end, probably the heel. The finder kindly suggests this may be an insole from a work boot. The form is indeed comparable to that of work boot soles going back to medieval times. As the finder's suggestion is informed by family experience [as this reporter understands it] a modern date is suggested.

Copper alloy furniture fitting. A baluster-shaped plate with a cylindrical lug at one end, probably serving as an escutcheon to conceal a keyhole in an item of furniture. Possibly ferrous corrosion appears at the lug on which the object would pivot. Worn traces of a four-character maker’s stamp appear on the outer side. Abraded. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800

Object type: NET SINKER
Broad period: UNKNOWN

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead net sinker. A weight made by the rolling of a rectangular billet of cast lead sheet of thickness 2mm, which would be wrapped around the selvedge of a net; patinated, pierced and lightly squashed. In this case, the weight appears to have been unclenched for its removal from the net. A pierced hole might suggest light gnawing by a dog, so an eager interpreter might posit a fisherman - or perhaps a wildfowler - accompanied by his hound. Examples from the riverside settlement at Flixborough suggest a local Middle Saxon use for weights of this form on the River Trent, though in London…

Lead net sinker. A weight made by rolling a rectangular billet of cast lead sheet of thickness 1.4mm, which would be wrapped around the selvedge of a net, in this case with an overlapping seam; patinated, and lightly squashed. The weight may in this case have been deposited or lost while attached to the net, which might be used for fishing or wildfowling. Examples from the riverside settlement at Flixborough suggest a local Middle Saxon use for weights of this form on the River Trent, though in London similar weights came from a late medieval boat in the Thames at Blackfriars bridge. …

Lead possible weight. Cast plano-convex weight with a central moulded aperture of diameter 4.7mm. Shrinkage on the flat surface may suggest this was cast in an open mould. Patinated. The hole might have been intended for stringing as a line weight, though there is no marking to suggest this - the finder kindly notes this was found near other net sinkers close to the old course of the River Don. For a game piece, a class of early medieval object also of this form, it might accommodate a wooden peg for use with a holed game board such as Hnafetafl. The mass might suggest this to repres…

Copper alloy possible mount. A small cast bag-shaped or cooking-pot-shaped plate, thickened in a U-shaped patch at the top of the back, where the stub of an integrally cast fixing pin projects. Lead ingot. A small pear-shaped plano-convex section cast ingot with the imprints of a sand bed in which it was moulded on its convex lower surface [as made]. Copper alloy purse fitting, as kindly identified by the finder. Cast oval D-section loop with a simple tripartite moulding at its narrower end, from which projects a stalk of length 13mm. The stalk is stained by rust, presumably indicating material into which it was inserted, burred lightly at its end, and with free rotary movement intended. Detached from the frame which it would suspend, the appearance resembles that of a noose. Typical of Williams Class C purses. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600

Copper alloy toggle. A solid cast object of dense metal comprising three sub-spherical objects, two larger and one smaller, each with a fringe of between three and five basal petals. The intended subject may be three hazelnuts, which might appear in this clustered wise on the tree or below it. The oval section scar of a lost element appears in the same position on the upper side of each of the larger nuts and may suggest a loop rising between them, probably to pass behind the smaller nut. The object bears white metal plating overall, and all its elements are lightly flattened and have …
