Copper alloy possible stylus. Cast round section rod with a moulded point at one end, flat at the other. The form closely resembles that of both lead dry-points of medieval date and the similar lead pencils for schoolroom use which are of later post-medieval date. Late Roman finds are prominent in the vicinity, so this may be a fragment wjhich has lost the spatulate eraser usually associated with Rpman styli. Lead weight, made from offcut. A fragment of cast lead of trapezoid section, with cut and chatter marks on all sides; patinated. The mass might approach that of one lighter Viking-Age Ora/Ore comprising six sub-units of 4.07gms to enable use as a weight at that time, though the correspondence with that value is less exact than would normally be deemed significant by this reporter. Other finds from the vicinity are of mainly Roman date, though with later material present. Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast globular or bun-shaped whorl with opposed flat sides and with a slightly off-centre square moulded aperture of c.8mm square; patinated, with a cut by the hole on one side which might represent a tying notch. The thick patina points to an object of some age. If indeed a whorl – the square hole would be an aberrant feature – the spindle hole size would fall between the ranges accepted for earlier and later parts of the early medieval period. Whorls in other materials acquired lathe-turned globular forms from about the 13th century, which migh…

Five flint chunks; debitage, of uncertain date, Mesolithic to Bronze Age (10,000 - 1000 BC). There is one primary, and three secondary of white flint with white cortex. The last is tan coloured flint with inclusions, and appears to be naturally frost fractured. Since flint is not found locally naturally, it is probably a fractured piece of debitage.

An incomplete copper alloy object, most likely a finger ring of unknown date. The ring has a bezel which is sub-rectangular in plan and flat in section with a thickness of c. 1.5-2mm. It is curved in profile, which may be a combination of its original shape to fit the curvature of a finger, and post-depositional distortion. Oyster shell. The bottom half of an edible oyster shell. A seafood diet was introduced or expanded under Roman rule, when British oysters acquired an empire-wide reputation. Oysters remained as a common foodstuff into the early post-medieval period, their availability probably only declining with environmental degradation in industrial times – though Viking Age York contrived to pollute its waterways to an extent which altered the local faunal range significantly.
