Possibly pottery. Reduced shell tempered fabric with abundant calcareous inclusions to length 6mm. It is uncertain whether this comes from a very abraded potsherd which has lost all its original surfaces, or whether it may be from a structure made of daub which was tempered with shell. The finder kindly notes the presence of a marine shell fragment in NLM-C4F4B2 so this could be from a less burnt part of the same structure. A fragment of Iron Age pottery, c.150 BC-AD 43.
This is a piece of the wall of a large vessel, probably used for cooking, given the large amount of grog within the fabric. This grog appears to be made of crushed shells and possibly chalk. One face of this fragment is darker than the other, which could indicate that this was the outer face that was exposed to more heat and smoke.

The sherd is shaped like an irregular pentagon in plan. The sherd is 31.71mm wide at the very top, expanding to 37.72mm wide towards the centre. This expansion is mainly due to the right hand side of the sherd widening, whilst the left hand side slants inwards at an angle, causing this initial section of the sherd to have a parallelogram like shape. The sherd narrows slightly to 35.48mm wide, before tapering to a rounded point at the bottom, though with a greater degree of tapering on the left hand side…

A rim sherd of a hand made ceramic vessel. The ware is probably an Iron Age shelly ware with frequent rounded quartz inclusions and very occasional grog inclusions. The vessel has a slightly thickened rim with possible obliquely angled nail impressions as decoration on the exterior. Some leaching of the fabric has occurred. The thickness of the vessel wall is 8.93mm thick and it weighs 17.45g. The ware may be described as SAG (S1) as outlined by Booth in Booth and Simmonds (2018, Table 7.2).

A rim and neck fragment of an Iron Age or Roman period pottery vessel, c.100 BC - AD 100.
This fragment has a reddish-orange outer face and a lighter yellowish-orange centre and inner face. The material contains abundant coarse grit for a grog. The high quantity of grit in the clay would have been extremely rough on the hands, this along with the thickness of the vessel walls, suggests that this was hand-made and not wheel-turned. There is no clear curve to the wall that could be used to estimate the diameter of the original vessel.
