The reported object is a small whistle made of silver sheet. It is complete, retaining a small suspension ring (for a ribbon) on its underside. It is plain without maker's mark or decoration, and has a domed end which has been soldered to the pipe. Metal Content Analysis to ascertain the elemental composition of the artefacts was carried out by Mary Davis using a CamScan MaXim 2040 analytical scanning electron microscope (SEM), plus an Oxford Instruments Link Isis energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX). The object was examined whole within the specimen chamber and analysed for 100…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Silver bezel of a finger ring containing an orangey-red, cornelian, intaglio. The edge of the bezel is decorated by a line of triangles running round its bottom edge and the back by an engraved floral pattern. The intaglio depicts a winged male figure, probably Cupid, a large bunch of grapes and an animal, probably a hare. The intaglio would appear to be Roman, depicting Cupid, a bunch of grapes and a hare. The same combination can be seen on an intaglio from Bath (Henig 1978, 200 no.113) where cupid is holding a bunch of grapes and a hare is jumping up to reach it. On the present int…

This is a nice example of a Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 3. flat wing ends type, middle Severn Valley)t Midlands). The large wings are hollow at the rear with the remains of the spring cord, still in position. The ends of the wings are pierced for a transverse spring axis bar, now missing. The wings are decorated at each end with an indented zigzag within moulded transverse lines. The upper section of the bow has a moulded central pattern of four longitudinal groves, cut across to form small blocks. That design tapers out below t…

Silver plated contemporary copy of a denarius of Faustina I (DIVA FAVSTINA), AVGVSTA, prototype struck at Rome, c. 141-50. RIC II c.f. 362 This little coin purports to be a genuine Roman silver denarius of Faustina the senior (Faustina I). It also carries the 'diva' inscription on the obverse, indicative of it having been struck after her death and deification in AD141. However, all is not as it should be, this coin is a 'Fourée', or an ancient fake, having a copper alloy core wrapped in a thin silver foil. That is evidenced by the small breaks in the surface on the drapes a…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Cast copper alloy decorative mount, pin head or figurine, possibly from a copper alloy vessel, of Roman date (50-410 AD). The fragment is irregular in both plan and profile being a scaled model of a bird (probably a hawk or eagle). In shape the animal is zoomorphic - and stylised - in plan the bird is broadly triangular and oval in cross section. The underside of the bird has an integrally cast lug like projection which presumably would attach the bird to the rim of a vessel or mount it on a wooden box / casket. It is also possible that this is the snapped stem of a pin. The back of t…

Object type: MINIATURE OBJECT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A miniature object in the form of a cast copper alloy axehead of probable of 1st/4th century Roman origin. The axehead may well have been hafted via the cast hole (eye) to the top of the blade. The axe is probably a votive device and whilst it is presumed to be Roman, a later medieval origin cannot be ruled out. The surface has a rough dark brown/green corrosion.
