An extremely Medieval French Jetton dating to c.15th centuries AD, probably a Tournai stock issue dating to c. 1415-c. 1497, but probably struck after 1478. (obverse as Mitchiner 1988, 223, ref: 651).
The obverse carries a crown within a wire line circle, surrounded by the legend AVE MARIA GRACIA PL ERA DN On the reverse is a double-voided cross fleuretty within a double tressure of four arches. In the centre of the cross is a voided quatrefoil and there is a flower of three petals in each of the angles. The letters A-V-E-M are within the corners.

Mitchiner (1988:269 no. 835-837) Mitchiner (1988:265) writes "The 'Venus pennies' were a popular series of jettons, or reckoning counters, that were made for the merchants of Antwerp during a period when this city was the flourishing principal commercial centre of the land, and were circulated amongst the merchant classes during the first half of the sixteenth century.
