Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An almost complete knapped, ground and polished flint axehead of late Neolithic date, c. 2700 - 2300 BC. The axehead is formed of an orange/brown flint with larger pale inclusions and small dark inclusions; probably a North Sea type flint. The axehead is sub-ovate in plan; narrower at the butt end with sides which gradually widen to the crescentic cutting edge. The axe has a slight humped profile and a regular oval cross section. The sides have three distinctive polished facets creating a slightly angled appearance with visible striations. The blade end exhibits prominent …

Object type: GRINDSTONE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete possible saddle quern handstone of basaltic composition of Neolithic date, c.4000 – 3000 BC. The object is sub-ovate in plan and section with two flattened surfaces, likely formed by repeated grinding. One surface is fairly shallow while the second is more prominent and heavily worked with an approximately 45 degree angle. A large removal with two smaller adjacent removals, presumably accidental, are present to one edge of the large worked surface. A smaller chip is present at the opposite side of the smaller surface. The object is 122.8mm long, 73.9mm wide, 43…

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete stone axehead of Neolithic date (c. BC 3500-1200). The axehead is trapezoidal in plan with a pointed ovate section. The surfaces are smooth and polished, with some chips and edges missing from the both ends, which is likely to be caused by post-depositional damage. The long edges of the axehead have been faceted so that they appear rectangular. The axehead is 100.7mm long, 53.8 to 36.6mm wide, 29.9mm thick and weighs 208g. The axe is comprised of a grey-green fine-grained siliceous tuff - a sedimentary volcanic rock possibly from the Great Langdale quarries i…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete knapped lithic implement of Neolithic date, circa 4000 - 2300 BC. The implement is a scraper, designed to be held between the thumb and forefinger, formed from a tertiary flake which is D-shaped in plan and ovate in section. The ventral surface is smooth with a bulbar scar. The dorsal surface displays multiple removals with short, semi-abrupt, sub-parallel retouch along the curved edge. The flint is a dark blue/black in colour. The implement is 25.9mm long, 21.5mm wide, 7.7mm thick and weighs 4.7g. Scrapers are fairly ubiquitous throughout prehistory and are gener…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete knapped lithic implement of late Neolithic date, circa 2700 BC - 2350 BC. The implement is the proximal portion of a blade formed from a tertiary flake which is D-shaped in plan and section. It has a fairly regular latitudinal break to the upper end. The ventral surface is smooth with ripples of percussion radiating from a prominent bulb. The dorsal face is irregular with semi-abrupt, short, parallel retouch along the right edge. The flint is a light to mid-grey colour. The implement is 35.6mm long, 23.4mm wide, 7.3mm thick and weighs 5.9g.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete knapped lithic implement of Neolithic date, circa 4000 - 2300 BC. The implement is a scraper, designed to be held between the thumb and forefinger, formed from a secondary flake which is D-shaped in plan and plano-convex in section. The ventral surface is smooth and displays a wide striking platform and prominent, central bulb of percussion. The dorsal surface has a small area of cortex on the unworked left side. The rounded edge is worked with scaled and sub-parallel, semi-abrupt angled retouch to create the scraping edge. The flint is pale grey in colour, darker on the…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A scraper of probable Neolithic date, 4000 - 2350 BC. The scraper is formed from a secondary flake. There is a small amount of cortex remaining at the proximal end, where there is the striking platform. The flake is mottled grey in colour. On the dorsal face there is semi-abrupt, semi-parallel extensive retouch at the distil end. A flake has been removed towards the right mesal, to facilitate holding the scraper between the thumb and the first index finger. The ventral face is smooth with a low bulb of percussion. Length: 26.6mm, Width: 19.5mm and Thickness: 7.1mm. Weight: 5.2gm

Dark grey flint with possibly re-former cortex, possibly collected from the East Coast; scraper. An oval flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a convex ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curving edge, with the area of cortex retained as a butt. A fresh grey tint to the flint may suggest this object has recently been disturbed from a sealed context. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 28.9mm, Width: 27.5mm, Thickness: 8.8mm, Weight: 9.01gms

Flint possible scraper. A trapezoid flake with broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a lightly convex ventral surface. An angled wedge-shaped end was perhaps formed by hard hammer strike executed from the dorsal aspect, and the grooves formed by the initial working may have afforded a thumb rest were this a working face. Dense creamy patina suggests the object has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment. It has subsequently been water-rolled. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 69mm, Width: 36.4mm, Thickness: 12.3mm, Weight: 37.00gms

Flint possible debitage. A small flake with broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a flat ventral surface. Dense creamy patina and light orange staining may suggest the object has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment, possibly followed by its incorporation into gravels.
