TREASURE CASE : 2023 T457. Description:  A silver Post-Medieval coin possibly a threepence of Elizabeth I dating to the period AD 1558 - 1603. Uncertain Issue. Square shield on long cross fourchee reverse. Uncertain initial mark. Mint of London.  The coin has been cut approximately in half and folded over at each end. Dimensions: The coin is 12.3mm long, 10.8mm wide, 2.6mm thick and weighs 1.2g. A hammered silver coin of Elizabeth I, probably a groat but possibly a sixpence. The bust particularly appears to have been deliberately defaced, and there are 2 symbols stamped on the reverse above the shield, which look like '+' and 'h' (or 'n'). Their purpose is unclear, but may be connected with the defacement of the bust. The coin is the right size for an early groat, or a later sixpence.
