The initial mark on the obverse and reverse is an ermine. On the obverse, the crowned bust is facing left with a rose behind. The inscription on the obverse is 'Elizabeth DG Ang Fra Et Hib Regina.' Much of the inscription has worn away and only the bottom of the bust can be seen; the rest of the face and crown are obscured by wear and abrasion. The coin is now misshapen and has chipped edges.
A square shield on a long cross fourchee is on the reverse; the cross divides the inscription on the edge of the coin. The date '157 ' is above the shield but the last number of the date is missing. The inscription on the reverse reads 'Posui Deu Adiutorem Meu.'

An extremely worn and bent silver half groat, probably of Elizabeth I dating from AD 1583-1603.
Possibly third coinage. No clear initial mark, Tower mint. As North (1991: 137) no. 2016.
The coin appears to have been deliberately blackened, with a possible letter A inserted as part of a longer word, possibly a personal name, entirely defacing the coin. It has also been bent into an S shape, a tradition associated with tokens of affection.
Measurements: 18.1mm diameter, 0.9mm thickness, weight 1.86g.

Description: A post medieval silver shilling of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), third coinage, dating to AD 1584 -1587. Escallop initial mark. Minted at the Tower of London. There is a pierced hole, circular in shape, which is positioned at the 12 o’clock of the reverse. The obverse is noticeably scratched, while the reverse is unmarked.
Dimensions: The coin is 31.2mm in diameter, 1.0mm thick and weighs 5.47g. The hole is 2.0mm in diameter.
Discussion: The coin has been pierced which may indicate a secondary function which would normally indicate that it should be considered as potential treasure. The position of the piercing is consistent with its suspension as a jewellery item, intended to show the Royal Arms. However, since coins of this period with similar piercings appear in hoards of currency, it suggests that such objects could re-enter circulation as coins. Similar examples include WREX-411068, which is pierced in a similar position but designed to display the obverse rather than reverse face (White 2020). There is a clear possibility that the coin changed use multiple times, becoming a jewellery item, and then being placed back into circulation. Without a more secure context and presence of a chain for suspension, it cannot be ascertained at which stage of its biography the coin was deposited.
Conclusion: Although the object is over 10% silver, and over 300 years old at the time of discovery, it cannot be said with confidence whether this particular object was regarded as a coin or as an item of jewellery at the time of deposition. It therefore does not qualify as Treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act 1996.
