Hammered silver sixpence of Elizabeth I, dated 1579. The obverse shows the crowned bust of Elizabeth facing left with a rose behind the head, and reads ELIZABETH D G ANG FR ET HI REGINA (Elizabeth by the grace of God Queen of England France and Ireland) with a plain cross as the initial mark. The reverse shows a long cross over the royal shield with 1579 above the shield, and reads [PO]SVI DEV ADIVTORE[M MEV] (I have made God my helper), presumably with a plain cross as initial mark, although this is no longer visible, due to clipping.

The reverse shows a square shield on long cross fourchee dividing the legend, which reads r.+CIVI/TAS/LON/DON. The initial mark on both sides is a cross-and-crosslets. The coin is clipped. Weight 0.48g, max diameter 14.4mm.

Copper alloy coin weight, square. The obverse bears the hand of Antwerp (upright) with a "9"(?) to the left of the hand and a "0" to the right (for 1590), and an "H" below the 9 on the left. The H will be the maker's initial - presumably there should be another to the right of the hand, although this cannot be seen. P&BR Withers (1995) list two Antwerp coin weight makers with the first initial H - Hans Foncq., 1577-1603 and HW, an unknown 16th century maker. The reverse shows a crowned shield possibly containing a lion (?), with lettering around, possibly O(?)HO trefoil IRE trefoil ...…
