A silver Roman denarius of the Civil Wars, c.AD 68 (Reece period 3). PACI P R revese type depictign Clasped hands holding winged caduceus. This rare piece was struck between April and June AD 68 by Galba in Spain. Galba had agreed to join the revolt against Nero so started to strike coins. Some of the early coins did bear his name and portrait, but others looked back to the past. One issue bore the head of Augustus. This particular coin is copied from a Republican coin of L. A plated silver Roman denarius copying a coin of the Civil Wars, dating to the period c.68-69 (Reece period 3). SIGNA P R reverse type depicting an Aquila between two standards, an altar to right. Protoype of the Gallic mint associated with the revolt of Vindex in AD 68. cf. RIC I (2nd ed.), p. 207, no. 51. There appears to only be one other example of this type on the PAS database, YORYM-E72984. This coin is a plated contemporary copy with the base metal core visible in several places on both faces as well as some iron corrosion on the surfaces.
