The extant piece consists of a side knop which would have been attached to the headplate of the brooch.. It is dumbbell shaped in plan and plano-convex in section, with a flat reverse. The front face consists of two lobes joined by a constricted mid-setion. Each lobe is decorated with three incised transverse grooves. At the efge of one of the lobes is a shall median rectangular groove which would have facilitated attachment to the brooch. It is now covered with iron staining.
Half-round externally cast side knops are generally consistent with Martin's Group 2 cruciform brooches falling within the Phase B chronology dating to circa AD 475-550 (2015: 128).

The foot is missing. The head plate is rectangular and has an integral full rounded top knop; the latter has a domed head, a waist and a base, which extends outwards on the front face. The head plate has bevelled sides and has the same width as the arched bow protruding from its lower edge; its back face has a pierced semi-circular tab which is blocked by a fragment of the iron axis-bar; a fragment of the spring and iron corrosion products are encrusted around the lug. The bow is semi-oval in cross-section and has an upper and lower step; both steps have a V-shaped notch in the short sides and a pair of transverse grooves on the long side facing the central part of the bow. The front face of the bow has a longitudinal central groove. The foot tapers in before terminating in an old break. The reverse of the head houses the pierced lug for the iron pin mechanism, which is missing, however, iron corrosion remains. The reverse of the foot, before the old break, houses the remains of a catchplate and a groove for the pin.

It is shaped like an elongated sphere. The neck is long and flat, sub regtanular in shape. In the centre, near the tip is a suspension hole. The base is flat in the centre and would therefore stand. Weights like these are seen in the Roman (for example SUSS-EA2CCC) and Medieval (NLM-5D1F37) periods. The weight of 192g does not accord with the Roman weight system, as 1 semis is equvilent to 164.5g. It is closer to the Troy system, where 1/2 lb would be 186.5g, this was probably in use from the late 14th century, only being standardised in 1588 (Biggs p.16). Accordingly a medieval date is attributed to this find.
Dimensions: It is 55mm tall and 30mm wide, the suspension hole is 5mm in diameter and it weighs 192g2936125015884LANCUM2024-01-01T00:00:00Z2024-03-10T00:00:00ZWith finder2024-03-27T13:47:50Z2024-03-27T15:06:23Z192PAS66042386001E223055125142141431435531216543553Cheshire EastCheshire EastRestricted AccessNear Church LawtonRestricted Accessbands.shops.handy6LANCUM-423B6ELead Alloy11095CompleteGoodMEDIEVALx14221POST MEDIEVALx41047x14221Metal detectorReturned to finderLANCUM-42386D_660426e763696.jpg1269830images/paulinemclarke/North WestCertain12024-03-27T15:06:23.89Zfinds-11577151157715SF-4234A4UNIDENTIFIED OBJECTUNKNOWNA unidentified, undatable silver object. Fine oxidised fabric with slight mica dusting on its surface. Miniature wheel thrown-vessel, in the form of a jug with plain rim – no pouring spout – and with a biconical body with expanded pedestal base [turning lines on base] and with an applied corrugated strap handle with a trefoil lower end. Dark-stained on one side, chipped at rim. Probably a tourist souvenir from the Mediterranean. The finder kindly reports that Roman material was discovered when nearby houses were built [on Roman Way], and miniature vessels were used in the Roman period, especially as grave goods. However, the fabric is suspiciously fine for a genuine antiquity while an applied strap handle would normally be a feature of a later – medieval – vessel. Darkened patches may be staining from soil or its contaminants, or may hint that the pot had been incorporated in a bonfire. Suggested date: probably Modern, 1970-2000
