A complete Medieval to post-Medieval stone counter or weight The weight is circular in plan and domed in cross section with a convex upper surface and flat reverse. It is undecorated but has a semi glossy off white patina. The token is 22.3mm in diameter,9.5mm thick and weighs 28.95 grams.

Stone possible line weight. Pale fine-grained Sandstone. A small lightly concavo convex sub-rectangular stone chip with a hole of diameter 2mm drilled through its top [as presented here]. The drilling of this unpromising material was as skilful as the final result now appears unappealing, so some further surface may have been lost. This object might have been used as an improvised line weight though, with a lesser density than lead, a small stone chip would lose the mass of the water it displaced when submerged, and would be inherently less satisfactory. Suggested date: possibly Mediev…

A complete stone weight of uncertain date. The chalk has been shaped into a oval with a single pierced hole at one apex (the hole widens through the item, diameter 10mm on one surface and 15mm on the other surface). The pierced hole shows no sign of wear. Stone weights are very difficult to date unless found in association with other archaeological finds or remains, as the form changed little from prehistory until the post medieval period.

Perforated stone weight of uncertain date possibly medieval The weight is of irregular rectangular form (93.9mm long, 66.6mm wide and weighing 150.5g), of variable thickness (with a maximum thickness of 19.5mm) and is made from a coarse-grained sandstone. The top edge and one of the side edges appear to be moderately rounded and are likely to be unmodified, while the other two edges are irregular and probably trimmed to the desired shape. The perforation is circular (10.6mm diameter) and is wider at one face, but appears to have been drilled rather than pecked. One face (convex) …

A worn and battered stone weight. The weight is approximately circular in shape and has a drilled cylindrical hole running running through its core  (c.12mm diameter). This appears to have been drilled from each side. The stone has lots of damage across its outside surface possibly from plough damaged while the hole is worn smooth. The weight is 63mm in diameter and weighs 130 grams. The technique of drilling from both sides is known from stone querns dated from the later Bronze Age onwards, and is also usual for stone weights. Artefacts in the area are predominantly Roman…

A complete stone object, possibly a loom weight for a warp weighted loom of Uncertain date (AD 1066-1500). The object is composed of fine grained sandstone, is roughly semi-circular in plan though it would have been sub-circular in form, the object has been broken across the midsection. The object retains an off centre perforation. The object has a convex upper and roughly flattened base. Loom weights were used to keep the vertical threads, or warp, tight on a loom during weaving while the horizontal thread, or weft, was passed through the warp. Length: 110.35mm, Width: …

Pale Limestone possible weight fragment, as kindly suggested by the finder. A small pebble with a deep [3mm] groove at one end, and a flattened area aligned with this. The groove may initially have served as a tying notch. Its continuation is truncated by another flat and smoothed surface. The stone is probably too soft to have served as a plough pebble, but some form of reuse as a rubber or polisher may have produced the flat surface as it now appears. The exploitation of erratic pebbles as sharpeners or rubbers is particularly common between later Prehistory and the end of the Early…

An incomplete stone Loom Weight of probable Medieval date (AD 1066-1500). The weight is an irregular circle in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. It has an off-centre perforated / drilled circular hole. The central hole is crisp and straight edged. There is a small chip resulting in the loss of a portion of the outer edge of the object. It is very difficult to date this type of artefact as they are common finds from most archaeological periods. This example is relatively light and small compared to others. A possible prehistoric date could be attributed, however any distinc…

Limestone cobble possible unfinished weight. A slightly irregular water-rolled cobble with possibly part-drilled holes at a thinner part towards one edge; if indeed drilled, then this was from both sides. The sharply indented form might alternatively have arisen from the activity of a boring animal or from the loss of embedded fossils, both being natural processes. An artificial origin might be supported by the rough chipping of stone from either side of the cobble, which, if deliberate, may have lessened the depth to be bored. The enterprise was at all events abandoned. Improvised we…

A perforated stone object of uncertain date, probably used as a weight. It is circular in plan, with flattened surfaces top and bottom. Edges appear bevelled but it is not clear if this is intentional or the result of wear and damage. The surface has been worked smooth but there are multiple chips and breaks. The surface lacks the very smooth or polished appearance of so-called 'battle axes' or 'maces'. The stone appears to be sedimentary, possibly a fossiliferous limestone. The perforation is 19 mm diameter and well formed, running as a smooth walled cylindrical tube through the o…
