A complete cast iron trade weight dating to the Post-Medieval to Modern period (c.AD 1600-1826). Description: The weight is circular in shape with a raised rim with recessed centre on the upper surface  There are two incised concentric circles in the centre. At 12 and 6 o'clock are stamped the City of Westminster 'portcullis'; the in the style of the pre-imperial standard (pre 1826) mark. The lower surface has a wide flat rim with indented centre. Within this are three concentric ridges surroundinding a raised central nub, this has been i…

An incomplete cast iron trade weight with copper alloy insertion (or outer layer) of early medieval date, c. 900-1100. This object is an oblate spheroid (flat topped sphere) trade weight with probable Viking association. Weights like this were possibly imported alongside Islamic systems of measurement and appear in excavation contexts in Scandinavia and in England. It consists of an iron core in the shape of a sphere with flattened ends. There is a copper-alloy element in the flatter end of this object, which is possibly an insertion as coins and other objects are sometimes foun…

An iron object, possibly a weight, of Post Medieval to modern date, AD 1800 - 1950. It is rectangular with a chamfered edge so the top face is smaller than the lower face.  There are circular marks on both faces, but it is difficult to know if these are intentional or a product of corrosion. Dimensions: length 20.5mm, width 12.6mm, height 3.7mm, weight 5.48g. The object is similar to a domino, but is smaller and does not appear to have a central division line. It could be a weight to add mass such as those to adjust a clock.

Iron possible weight. Cast heater shield-shaped weight, with slight loss of fabric to the flaking of corrosion at the arises or angles, otherwise in good condition. The mass may suggest this to have represented one half of an averdepois pound, though the manufacture of such an object in iron seems perversely difficult. Some iron implement teeth from agricultural machinery might also acquire such a form through wear, though there is no sign of this having broken from a larger object or setting. Suggested date: Late Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1450-1600 Height: 67.7mm, Width: 53.1mm, …

Iron and copper alloy possible weight. A possibly cast iron object of a solid flat-based bowl-shaped form with relicts of thin [0.3mm] copper alloy sheathing on its flat base. This appears to have formerly extended further up the sides of the 'bowl', though both its original extent and the overall completeness of the object remain uncertain. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1750-1900. Diameter: 57.3mm, Thickness: 15.5mm, Weight: 182.70gms

An iron core in copper-alloy casing Early Medieval weight, dating to AD 850-1066. It is spherical with two opposite flat faces. One face has a circular sunken line decorated with a series of punched annulets; the opposite flat face might have had the same decoration, but the iron corrosion has burts through the copper-alloy coating and covers large part of the surface. Cf. Rogerson (in EAA 74, 1995, p. 69, fig. 52, no. 136). See a parallel on PAS: NMS-8BB723 Diameter: 24.23 mm Height: 17.83 mm Weight: 40.51 g

Iron probable weight. A straight-sided cast iron block with one straight and one curved end. A round hole of diameter 14.8mm appears set centrally, towards the curved end. A slot of length and width c.9mm abuts the hole and confers the appearance of a key hole. The object was at first taken to be a padlock, but is solid with no provision for a lock mechanism. It may be that the configuration of the hole was intended to permit a locking bar to pass through the hole, which would seem apt for the attachment of weights to agricultural machinery. The best indication if date is afforded …

A heavy iron (possibly lead filled) object which may be a Roman steelyard poise. The object is in essence a heavy round globular ball with a protrusion at one end which may have been an integral circular-section suspension loop with a collar. The base is slightly flattened. The object has a seam running around it from top to bottom. The patina of the object is dark black with a silvery sheen. There are large patches of reddish-brown corrosion. The object weighs 347g and measures 56.87mm in height and has a circumference of 45.85mm. Cf Read B, 2001, Metal Artefacts of Antiquity, P…

A spherical, cast iron weight, probably of post Medieval or Modern date, about AD 1700 - 1900. There is a thin iron wire suspension loop, now broken. The weight is 52.3mm in diameter and weighs 474gm (1 pound, 0.75 ounces). It may have been intended as a 1lb weight without the corrosion.

A very worn and heavily restored late early-medieval barrel-shaped weight. It is biconical in form with flattened top and bottom surfaces. The weight has the remains of an iron core surrounded by a largely incomplete and heavily repaired/restored copper-alloy casing. On the flattened top and bottom surfaces the casing has stamped decoration. This comprises at least two rectilinear motifs formed from parallel transverse grooves from which at either and and at the centre extend short vertical and curvilinear strokes. These motifs appear almost like crowns stacked one above the other, al…
