Sub-circular stone disc with fairly flat faces probably representing the original stone surface. There is no sign that the edges of the stone were trimmed, all have been smoothed off somewhat by wear, possibly natural erosion as well as use, suggesting the shape is of some antiquity. It seems likely that the stone was chosen for its shape rather than being shaped to order. There is an 'hour glass' shaped hole cut through the disc face and located towards one edge. The actual piercing is more oval in shape measuring 9.45mm by 7.89mm. The bevel around the hole is circular and fairly s…

Stone prehistoric loom or net weight, (2150BC-100AD). The object is a sub-oval stone which has been worked to create a weight used with either a loom or a net. At the narrower end of the object, a hole has been bored through from one side of the stone to the other, creating a perforation with which to attach the weight. The perforation is regular and larger on one side than the other. The larger side of the perforation measures 15.28mm in diameter. The smaller side is 11.09mm in diameter. There are two depressions on the wider end of the weight, however these are likely to have for…

A probable triangular shaped loom weight made out of fired clay. It is subrectangular in shape, and the underside demonstrates a semi circular depression. The sherd is 31.49mm thick and weighs 169.1g. It is 76.73mm long and 72.80mm wide. The fabric is similar to that published as GR2 (fine grog/clay pellet with some leached shell) in McSloy 2007, p 25, dated to the Bronze Age (c.2150 BC to c.800 BC) but without the fossil shell. Sherd specific details: Fabric type: Grog, frequent mica inclusions. Firing condition: oxidised exterior, unoxidised core Hardness: Hard …

Carved loom or net weight of unknown date (probably Bronze Age – Post Medieval 2150 BC – 1650 AD). The weight is sub circular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. It has an off-centre perforated hole (diameter: 9.5mm). The weight has been carved from Oolitic limestone. It measures 54.5mm length, 56.1mm width, is 16.7mm thick, and weighs 62.44 grams. It is very difficult to date this type of artefact as they are common finds from most archaeological periods. This example is relatively light, compared to other sized loom or fish weights. This might hint towards an i…
