Medieval weight; Cast lead weight of bell shape: The weight is essentially a circular cone, although it flares out towards the bottom and is flattened at the top. It has a curved suspension loop at the top, formed from a strap of lead, and is pierced in the centre of the base. The weight looks to have been reshaped after casting, although this is difficult to determine as it is also somewhat pitted and gouged across its surface. The lead has a white patina, of varying thickness. Height 41.3mm, width (“diameter”) 33.4mm, weight 185.3g Lead weights are difficult to date due the…

Cast lead alloy circular disc weight, probably medieval, ?12th or 13th century. The upper surface has raised decoration of an octofoil (or floriated cross?) with alternating pointed and rounded petals, and mis-formed central circular pellet. On the reverse are a central circular dimple, a wide shallow linear groove across two-thirds of the diameter, a narrow linear groove crossing this, and three closely spaced short linear scratches (with another possible scratch to the left) towards the edge (possibly denoting the weight?). Two areas of damage to the edge. Diameter 33.85mm, thickness…

A small pyramidal shaped lead weight, with a rectangular base. The weight has four triangular faces. The four triangular faces meet at the apex. The faces are all irregular as the weight has been crudely made. The base has had a two holes pushed through it, these holes perforate through to the sides of the weight. The weight is undecorated but has a very rough surface. A typology of lead weights has not yet been developed, so these weighs are not yet completely understood. Due to a lack of context this weight must remain undated. The weight appears to be complete. The lead is a …

Copper alloy trade weight. Probably 15th to 16th century. A small, circular, uniface weight. There are two concentric incised lines at the edge. The obverse is stamped with a crown at one edge and a lis opposite at the other edge. These stamps are over the incised bands. There is small hollow at the centre of the weight and the whole surface is slightly concave. The reverse of the weight has clear file marks over the whole surface. The weight of the object does not appear to conform with any known 15th to 16th century weights for coins and the placement of the symbols is different to …

A large weight made of lead. The weight is tear-drop shaped, but the reverse is completely flat. The weight is undecorated. The lead has gone a light greyish-white colour. Some damage has occurred to the weight as a result of being hit by the plough, as several scratches and scars are evident on the surface of the weight. This weight is possibly medieval, but most probably post-medieval in date. Due to that fact that so few lead weights have been found in archaeological contexts, only a very broad date range can be allocated.

These weights are widely known as 'spindle whorls' and have been found in archaeological contexts of the late medieval period, but it possible that they had a much wider use, such as as netsinkers or weights for traps. The upper face of the weight is recessed and stamped with three motifs: a sword, a crowned C and a faint letter A (for the averdepois system of weight). The sword is a London mark and the crowned C is for Charles I or II.

A worn and corroded sub-conical weight cast in lead. The crude base bears an off-centre perforation which runs along the length of the object (Dia.: c. 7.6mm); the hole tapers slightly towards the top. Around the hole is possibly a circular groove. This weight is undiagnostic and could date anywhere from the Roman to post-medieval periods.

Circular lead alloy weight probably from the Medieval period. The front of the weight has a circular depression in the centre, in which is an 'I'. The depression is surrounded by 2 incised circles which look as though they have been cast in at the time of making the weight. The 'I' appears to have been added later, by hand. The back of the weight is flat and has 2 lines scratched into it. It is likely these have been made through wear, or from the plough once the weight was in the ground. There are chips on the weight which are also likely to be plough damage. No typology has been m…

Possible medieval weight; Cast lead disc which may be a weight. The weight is circular with cast relief decoration on one face. The design seems to show a beast rampant, facing left in the centre with an inscription around the edge. Corrosion and wear have unfortunately rendered the inscription illegible. The reverse side has a small circular hole in the centre but is otherwise undecorated. This may be comparable to the weight shown in Biggs & Withers ‘Lead Weights; The David Rogers Collection’ as number 33, on page 23, although that example is much larger and heavier. Diamet…

A cast lead weight biconical in shape, with a central hemisphere. The remains of an iron spike extend through the centre. The iron spike could once have formed part of a handle or loop; it is badly rusted. The weight is undecorated, but appears to be well worn. The weight is complete, apart form the iron spike that appears to have been broken. The lead is a light whitish-grey colour. Due to a lack of excavated examples and context this weight must remain undated.

A small, shallow domed lead weight, with a circular base. There is a perforation running through the centre of the weight. The weight is undecorated but the weight has a very rough surface, suggesting that it has been crudely made. A typology of lead weights has not yet been developed, so these weighs are not yet completely understood. Due to a lack of excavated examples and a lack of context this weight must remain undated. The weight appears to be complete. The lead is a light whitish-grey colour.
