A complete cast lead weight, probably dating to the Roman period, between AD 43 – 410 (diameter: 31mm; thickness/ depth: 16mm; weight: 113.5g). This weight is circular in plan and flat in section. The Roman numerals ‘III’ are incised into the upper face of the artefact, although there is a long scratch or possible incision to one side, which gives the appearance of an additional ‘I’. There are no other markings on this artefact. The base/ underside of the weight is slightly recessed in the centre. Overall, the artefact is in a slightly worn and fair condition with a ligh…

A slightly incomplete cast lead standing weight, dating from the Roman – Post Medieval period, between AD 43 – 1800 (length: 29.5mm; diameter at base: 23mm; weight: 52.99g). The octagonal pyramid weight has an slightly broken tip where a probable suspension hole may have once been present. Each tapering side of this octagonal weight extends downwards to form an slightly irregular sub-circular base. The base of the artefact is uneven with a circular indenation visible in the centre (diameter of indentation: 4mm; approximate depth of indenation: 4/5mm). Overall, the weight is in a …

A cast lead (alloy?) disc shaped object which may be a weight, token or gaming piece. The front of the object features a concentric rib within the disc, and a raised border around the circumference. The inner rib stands in slight relief of the border when the object is viewed in profile. There is a raised pellet in the centre of the front of the disc, and two “Y” shaped designs with internal pellets, also raised, joining the inner rib with the central pellet. There is also a further rib, in low relief, between the inner rib and the border. The reverse of the disc is plain, although…

An incomplete cast lead weight (probably). Extant external diameter: 31.2mm; internal diameter: 9.2mm; thickness: 11.2mm; mass: 20.6g. The object has a perforated sub-biconical central portion, attached to an incomplete outer ring by a series of ribs which radiate outwards. The object has a pitted brown/grey surface. The radiating ribs and outer ring are unusual, but the biconical shape with a central circular perforation is a recognised form for cast lead weights. A similar but more complete object is recorded on the PAS database (CPAT-39D310). Perfortated biconical lead weigh…

A complete lead or lead alloy weight, of probable Late Medieval to Post Medieval dating (AD 1300 to AD 1800). The weight is cylindrial in plan, and sub circular in cross section. One end has been squashed together. The central hole has an internal diameter of 8.1 mm. Corrosion products and soil are still present inside the central perforation. It is a light to mid grey colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, probably caused by movement in the plough soil, has resulted in the loss of a significant proportion of the original surface. It measures 42.6 mm long, has a diame…

A lead alloy weight, probably a trade weight. The weight is square and has a male bearded forward facing bust within a circle on the obverse. The reverse is plain. An inscription runs around the side of the bust although this is unclear. It appears to be retrograde and may read JAMES... raising the possibility that this is a mould rather than a weight, although this is currently uncertain. The weight measures 22.82 mm long and 22.23 mm wide. It is 3.65 mm thick and weighs 15 grams.

A probable moulded lead weight of uncertain date. The weight is sub-circular, with one flat side. It is flat on the reverse and has a stamped impression on the front which reads IIP (or dII if inverted) set within a border comprised of two lines. Outside this border there are traces of an inscription running around the side of the weight but this is now illegible. The weight measures 134.9 grams, the equivalent to 0.3 avoirdupois pounds. It measures 52.95 mm long, 52.68 and 11 grams thick. It has a cream patina.

A lead cuboid artefact, possibly a weight of some sort. None of the faces are inscribed, suggesting that this was not a die. It is slightly irregular, but clearly deliberately cuboid. Each face measures approximately 10 mm by 10 mm. It weighs 9.2 grams. This object is impossible to date on stylistic grounds and its date is therefore uncertain.

A cast copper-alloy cup weight, probably from a set of nesting weights. It is likely to be late medieval to post-medieval in date. The weight measures 11.47 mm high and tapers in diameter from 30.95 mm at the rim to 25.23 mm at the base. It weighs 22.2 grams, the equivalent of 0.783 troy ounces - it probably originally weighed one ounce. There is deep filing on the base. Where the original surface of the rim survives two decorative ring and dots can be discerned. The interior of the base of the weight has a circular depression in the centre and a stamped circular makers mark which con…

A copper-alloy 4 oz trade weight of post-medieval, probable Commonwealth date (1649-1660AD). The weight is circular with a raised rim. The centre has a central ring and dot surrounded by two incised circles. Around these there is a shield of St George to the left, a sword above, an A to the right and a ewer to the bottom right. The reverse has a central depression, surrounded by a circular depression. Grooves on the reverse may relate to filing in order to reduce the weight. A lead circular probable weight of undetermined date. The weight has unifacial decoration consisting of several irregular curved lines dividing the face into triangular 'wedges'. The reverse is plain. The weight is pierced with an off-centre sub-circular hole which measures approximately 3.15 mm in diameter. The small size of the hole suggests that this object is not a spindle whorl. The weight is 6.27 mm thick, 25.6 mm in diameter and weighs 29.8 grams. It has a cream coloured patina.

A group of four weights of uncertain date, perhaps dating from as early as the Roman period (or even earlier), although they could date from any point up until the modern period. There is little diagnostic about them, although one exhibits moulded linear decoration above and below a central rib with four moulded decorative lugs which may perhaps be medieval or post-medieval in style. Each has a circular perforation and they range in size from between 16.36 mm in diameter to 21.61 mm. Their precise function is uncertain. It is possible that they were net weights for nets used to catch …

A group of five lead weights recovered from the same area. The weights are lacking in stylistic characteristics which allow their date to be ascertained with confidence, but they are likely to be medieval or post-medieval. The group are of different types. One is hemispherical in shape, with a flat base and a domed top (number 1 in the image). This one measures 33.83 mm wide at the base, 19.84 mm high and weighs 82.8 grams (2.9 ounces in avoirdupois measurement, suggesting it may have been a 3 ounce weight).
