A complete cast lead trade weight of medieval to post-medieval date. The weight is shield shaped and is decorated on the upper surface with a crowned-lis. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The metal is a mid greyish-brown colour and is worn. The weight is 46.3mm long, 31.9mm wide, 4.6mm thick and weighs 48g. Lead weighs such as this were commonly used to weigh goods under the averdepois system from 1390 in England and were used throughout the 15th century. It is likely that these weights represent a desire to standardize the trade weight system. Biggs & Withers (2000, p.34) di…

Cast lead diver's weight acting as a strap junction for a metal and leather belt, with two rectangular openings, one in each terminal of the junction. One opening has been flattened in the centre, which may have been done deliberately to fix it more firmly to the strap. Both upper and lower surfaces are marked with several oblique gashes on either side which may have happened underwater or since being in a ploughed field.
