A complete lead alloy weight dating to the post medieval period (c.AD 1500-1700). The weight is bun-shaped with a flat base and rounded face. The face is deeply inscribed with VIII which attests to its weight as nearly 8oz. The object has a dark cream patina. Lead possible weight. Cast heater-shield-shaped plate with an indistinct symmetrical motif on its display side, possibly a lis or a crowned motif; patinated. The finder kindly suggests an identification as a pilgrim badge. The quasi-heraldic form, and perhaps the charge as well were it clearer, might both associate this with the 14th-century English vogue for heraldic motifs, which might be worn or carried by those with no noble connection or pretension. There is no apparent means of attachment. The mass equates to about one half of an averdepois ounce, thus respecting a system introdu…

Lead weight. Cast conical weight with a pinched apex with drilled hole for suspension, flat-based, patinated. A flat base would permit use as a standing weight in a scale pan. The approximate mass of this object recurs amongst lead weights of other forms from medieval London; its correspondence with the values of early medieval weights is less exact than would normally be deemed significant by this reporter, while the finder kindly suggests a Roman date and a function as a steelyard poise. The apical hole could also permit use as a line weight, also a probably medieval usage. Suggested…

A complete lead alloy weight likely dating from the medieval to post medieval period (c.AD 1400-1700). The object is circular with a flat face and base and a curved side. It is undecorated and has a light grey patina. Dimensions: Diameter 35.2mm; thickness 5.1mm; weight 45.48g Weights found outside of secure archaeological contexts, such as these, are difficult to date because their use and style remains continuous from the Roman period onwards. Most examples likely date from the medieval period onwards.

Dimensions: Length 41.5mm, Width at base 26.6mm, Thickness 13mm at base; Weight 72.51g Weights can be hard to date due to being a functional item that has not altered significantly over time. Biggs and Withers (2000) note that standing weights made of lead were still used in comparatively recent times.

A sub-triangular, cast lead perforated artefact, probably a weight, dating from the Post Medieval period, AD 1600 - 1900. It is flat in profile, and sub-triangular in plan, with curved sides and rounded corners. The edges are bevelled. The reverse is pitted, perhaps from the casting process. The narrow end is perforated with an irregular hole of 3-5mm diameter. The weight is 41.9mm long, 23.9mm wide and 5.9mm thick. It  weighs 36.4g. The mass does not obviously fit into standard units of measurement, but the weight may have been used to add mass, such as a line or net weight.

A spherical, cast lead perforated artefact of unknown date, probably Medieval to Post medieval, AD 1200 - 1800, probably used as a weight. The hole is wider at one end than the other (4.4mm diameter to 2.7mm diameter). It is 14.6mm in diameter and 12.5mm thick. It  weighs 15.5g (0.54oz). It is slightly over mass to be a half ounce weight (which should be 14.1g), though it could be a half ounce in the Apothecaries' system. It is often suggested that objects of this shape are beads or net or line weights for fishing or birding.

An incomplete lead alloy trade weight dating from the Medieval or Post Medieval periods. AD 1280 - 1800. It is shield shaped and the front is decorated with a moulded double fleur design on a raised plinth. The weight has a yellow grey patina with areas of wear. The top edge is probably a cut of patinated sheer break. The top of the fleur design is missing, and the mass is too heavy for a 2 ounce weight and not enough for a 4 ounce weight. It is probably an incomplete 4oz weight. A discoid, cast lead weight probably dating from the Medieval or Post-Medieval period, about AD 1280 - 1700. A complete lead-alloy object, probably a net sinker or fishing line weight, dating to c. AD 1500 - 1800 The object is cylindrical in form, and narrows towards each terminal. A circular sectioned longitudinal perforation extends down the centre of the object. This perforation is now filled with organic material. A longitudinal joins runs down one side, where the surface overlaps. It therefore appears to have been constructed from a single sheet rolled over onto itself. The metal has a grey/cream patina which is worn and nicked. The object measur…
